essential part of Chinese cultural heritage ever since.

The erhu consists of a long, thin, hollow wooden body that is covered on the front and back by snake skin. The soundbox is usually made of rosewood, ebony, or sandalwood, and the neck is made of bamboo. At the top of the neck is a small tuning peg, and at the other end is a rectangular wooden piece called the "qianjin," which holds the two strings in place.

The two strings of the erhu are traditionally made of silk, but modern erhus may also use steel strings. The strings are stretched over a bridge made of bamboo or ivory, which rests on the snake skin covering the soundbox. The bridge is held in place by two tuning pegs that are located on either side of the neck.

To play the erhu, the musician holds the instrument vertically on their left thigh and presses the strings down with their left hand while bowing with their right hand. The bow is a long, thin stick made of bamboo or sandalwood, with horsehair stretched between the two ends. The bow is placed between the two strings, and the musician uses their right hand to move the bow back and forth to produce sound.

The erhu has a unique and distinct sound that can range from soft and mellow to sharp and intense. It is often used to convey emotions in Chinese music, such as sadness, joy, or longing. The erhu is a versatile instrument that is used in a variety of musical styles, including classical, folk, and pop music. It is also commonly used in Chinese opera, where it is often used to accompany the singing and acting of the performers.

In recent years, the erhu has gained popularity worldwide and has been featured in many international music festivals and performances. Its distinctive sound and rich cultural history have made it a beloved instrument both in China and abroad.

Overall, the erhu is a beautiful and unique instrument that has played an essential role in Chinese music for centuries. The liuqin, a four-string Chinese lute that resembles a little pipa, is another four-string instrument that is plucked. Although historically the term pipa was formerly used to apply to a range of plucked chordophones, its usage since the Song era refers primarily to the pear-shaped instrument. The pear-shaped instrument may have existed in China as early as the Han dynasty.

One of the most well-liked Chinese instruments, the pipa, has been played in China for approximately 2,000 years.
The Japanese biwa and Korean bipa in East Asia, as well as the Vietnamese "àn t bà" in Southeast Asia, are only a few instruments that are related to the pipa.
