Formation of the de Gaulle government with Charles de Gaulle adopting more pro-Free Algeria sentiments while the UNO (United Nations Organization) rejects the independence of Algeria

21 December 1959 to 8th January 1961

General de Gaulle is elected as President of the Republic (of Algeria) and declares his support for Algeria's self determination. From then on until Jan 8th, 1961, the UNO recognizes Algeria's right to independence while a referendum held on Algeria's independence had a 75.26% support rate.

February 1961 to 18 March 1962

Secret Army Organization (OAS), led by former French Generals in Algeria, was formed to stop Algeria's independence and created a coup against the Algerian government but was suppressed by the people. The Evian negotiations for independence were suspended and waves of attacks by the OAS created fighting within the country until the cease-fire on 18th March 1962. The Evian Accords were signed which formalized Algeria as an Independent country and introduced peaceful exchanges between the two countries.
