Chunking Express is a 1994 film by Wong Kar Wai, which a about two stories of two different lonely police in Hong Kong.

-How did the film's lighting distinguish the scenes concerning the four main characters' POV?

The woman in the blonde wigs lighting was completely messy as to show how complex and fast her life is because of the dangerous job she has. She would always have a very harsh light with the use of the neon lights of Hong kong streets to both show what is she like as a person and the things she does for a living.

Pineapple mans lighting was very soft but very expressive how his loneliness. He would always hang around shops and store where the lights would softly glow over him, which gives the visual feeling of his emotion at the moment. He also has alot of scene wear he has kind off a silhouette lighting as the store lights would glow behind him.

As of all the characters in the film one thing i realize is Faye has the most scenes set in the morning. While most of the characters would have the neon lights at night to give the feeling of a very lonely sleepless night. Most Faye’s scenes would have a dreamy atmosphere in the morning, that gives the feeling of being in a dream that you dont know whats going on but would go along without questioning anything. Especially the scene where she would always visit cop 663’s apartment while the cranberries play in the background. It just gives the feeling of pure child-like joy.

While the scenes pf Cop 663’s apartment is in the same place as Faye’s dreamy montages. The place felt more gloomy and sad when hes the only one there. Cop 663’s face would always have this melancholia lighting whenever hes alone especially his bar scenes. But his face would literally and emotionally always light up whenever he visits Fayes store, as bright light of the place would always glow over him changing the characters mood.

-What do these specific lighting choices for each character convey to you, as a viewer?

I always feel like the lighting for the character is there to also tell a story and maybe even could be a character itself. The way the lighting and colors are use makes the characters more themselve. And maybe the characters wouldn't even have a as much as a big impact without the lighting and colors.

-Whose lighting setup, among our four characters, gave you the clearest idea of the character you were watching?

For me its definitely the pineapple man. he has so many scene of him just eating and doing very mundane things, but it would always feel and look so beautiful because of the lighting. One of the most beautiful show in the movie personally is the one where he eats a burger infront of a mcdonalds sign can already show me what kind of a character he is. Its just the way Wong Kar Wai uses neon store signs to convey loneliness is enchanting.

-As a matter of personal preference, which character's lighting scheme was your favorite?

I would still say its pineapple man as he has the many scenes with different lighting. And his scenes has the most creative lighting such as the mcdonalds scene, the CD player machine, the bar scene, and the fish tank scene.

-As a matter of personal preference, who was your favorite character and why?

Faye scenes would always bring me so much Joy. her eccentric character would always look so happy but still mysterious in every scene. She seems like the typa person who would enjoy whatever it is she has such as being a server in a store as long as she could play her favorite song.
