Part of the Cold War

The Korean War was part of the Cold War because both the United States and the Soviet Union took sides and fought against each other indirectly. The Soviet Union promoted Communism in the North and the United States fought against the spread in the South. The Soviet Union supported Communism via training the Korean and Chinese soldiers and aiding in planned attacks. The United States helped the south by providing military airforce, army, and navy. The Korean War connects to the present day because the relationship between the North and South is permanently damaged. Another impact of the Korean War was the U.S. understood that they may need to retain a military presence in certain areas even when there is peace. This presence could have prevented North Korea from invading and causing so many deaths. To this day, there is still a heavily guarded border that serves as an everyday reminder of the tensions between the two countries. Another effect of the Korean War on the modern world is there are some debates on whether or not North and South Korea should compete together at the Olympics. The two sides remain a competition between communism and republics.

HowStuffWorks et al. "Why The Korean War Still Matters".
