People have lived in communities since the beginning of human history, about 250,000 years ago, as a means of survival. People develop daily routines and behaviors when they live together, such as preferred ways of getting food or particular approaches to raising children.

To clarify, a culture represents the beliefs and practices of a group, while society represents the people who share those beliefs and practices.

Two components of culture

Culture can be divided into two categories:

Material culture refers to the objects or belongings of a group of people.

Non-material culture is a group's way of thinking such as their beliefs and values, and their patterns of behavior and languages.

While every people and groups have their own unique identity of culture, there still cultures that we are practice or known to everybody. This is what we call the Cultural Universals. Cultural universals are patterns or traits that are globally common to all societies. According to George Murdock, cultural universals often revolve around basic human survival like food, shelter, water, clothes, air, and sleep.

Folk Culture and Popular Culture

Folk culture is traditionally practiced primarily by small / specific groups. One example is wearing of baro't saya by women in the Philippines as the country's national dress. Popular culture on the other hand is found in large, heterogeneous societies. Pop culture diffused because of rapid simultaneous global connections through communications systems, transportation networks, and other modem technology. Rapid diffusion facilitates frequent changes in popular custom and popular culture is becoming more dominant, threatening the survival of unique folk cultures.

Ethnocentrism is the view that one's own culture is superior. Ethnocentrism involves having a perspective of other ways of life that is judgemental, while Cultural Relativism recognizes that different cultures should be understood on their own terms rather than judged. And Xenocentrism, which is the opposite view that other cultures are superior to one's own is the desire to engage in the elements of another's culture rather than one's own.
