Iago states that he does not agree with Othello’s ways of commanding and how he despises Othello. Iago mentions that he does not want to follow Othello as he it is not mandatory to be loyal to Othello. This part of the text relates to the inciting incident as it foreshadows that Iago may betray Othello and turn against him due to his hate towards him.

This relates to the rising action because Iago’s plan of getting Cassio and Desdemona closer is in action as Iago tells Cassio to ask Desdemona to ask Othello to recover his title. However, according to Iago’s plan, Othello might think that Desdemona is disloyal to him with Cassio due to their time spent together. This passage relates to the climax as Othello claims that if his wife has an affair, he will have no choice but to hate her. However, Othello said he will only fully believe it if he has proof of an affair. Othello already partially believes that Desdemona is being unfaithful to him, due to how Desdemona keeps requesting that Cassio get his title back. Othello’s state of mind at this point of the play is that he is slowly feeding into Iago’s deceptions, however, he refuses to believe his wife is cheating, without any proof. Here, Othello starts to believe in Iago’s lies and it can hint that he possibly doesn’t believe Desdemona would love somebody like him, which could mean Othello has insecurities. These insecurities made it easier for Othello to believe that Desdemona is having an affair, which makes them a weakness.

However, there is a misunderstanding where Othello believes they are talking about Desdemona. This is another change in Othello’s mindset because he now believes fully that Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio and he feels that Cassio has ‘won’. Othello has so much hate for Cassio and Desdemona that he plans on killing them. Othello shows that he is gullible and easily influenced because he listened to the conversation with the thought that they were talking about his wife, despite not hearing her name being brought up.
