         <description><![CDATA[<div>The United States became divided due to the decision of free or slave states. To preserve the balance of power in congress, the compromise of 1820 was passed to admit Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. A few things that caused the civil war was manufacturing, division between states, and debates between the north and south. </div>]]></description>
