In the Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare there are multiple characters that are represented as good or evil characters. For example in the beginning of the novel Kate is represented as an evil character. Shakespeare does this by showing her opposition to the standard in society. This is especially shown in her conversation with Petruchio when he is trying to woo her into liking him and she is persistent on not. In act 2 and scene 1 in lines 209-212 it says " Come, come, you wasp, i' faith you are too angry. / If I be waspish, best beware my sting. / My remedy is then to pluck it out. / Ay, if the fool could find it where it lies." This shows how Shakespeare is trying to portray Kate as someone who is the villain of the story which can corelate to being "evil". The effect that this can have on the audience is that it can cause the audience to begin to characterize Kate as a villain of the story. Although, this is limited depending on the type of audience and the time period. An audience reading during the Shakespeare era would most likely see Kate differently than an audience reading during present day. Overall this shows how Shakespeare used dialogue to represent the characterization of the characters.

In the book Persepolis "evil" characters are often represented using visuals with the black and white coloring. For instance many of the regime guards and officials are represented with dark shadows this causes them to be dehumanized. Another example of this can be the use of black-and-white for example in awful moments in the story there is heavy black ink used. This shows the amount of evil that is going on during that moment. Overall, the book Persepolis and the Taming of the Shrew both represent good and evil characters differently.

In the Taming of the Shrew, there are different forms of evil portrayed. To the readers, an example of a character aligning with traits of "evilness" is Petruchio. This is because he manipualtes Kate and takes advantage of her. Though Kate isn't aware of his true nature and identity, the readers know who he is beneath his disguise. Additonally, by lying about who he is and about his intentions, his objectives and goals are impure and don't fit into a category where he could be deemed good. Contrasingly, Kate can be another vessel of evil portrayal. To society, Kate is disobedient, independent, and harsh. The fact that she challenges her role in society and in the gender hierarchy allows her to fit the "evil" label because she is a "shrew".

As for Persepolis, an evil character is the shah. For example, in The Party chapter, a celebration is held in honor of the king's fall. This shows how much society ditessted him. It wouldn't make sense for the community to oppose a good man, so the shah falls within the evil category. Another instance of evil in Persepolis is the father of the Shah. He is described as confiscating all of Marji's grandpa's belongings and torturing him. An example of good in Persepolis is Marji. This is because she represents a pure, niave understanding of the harsh reality of her country. Because she is untouched, she's innocent and therefore is morally good in the face of so much sad realities and truth (she poses as a contradiction to the other characteres in the book).

Thus, good and evil characters are represented differently in each novel. Persepolis complicates good vs evil and TOTS clearly establishes but makes it different to the characters vs readers. The audience thus has a deeper understanding of good vs evil in TOTS because the novel explores both through different persepctives. Persepolis allows readers to have more of an opinion on good vs evil depending on the way they interpret things painted by the characters' dialouge.

In The Taming of the Shrew, good and evil are shown through how women act. Kate is called “bad” because she talks back and doesn’t follow men’s rules. Bianca is seen as “good” because she’s quiet and agreeable. But as the story goes on, Kate feels more real and likable, while Bianca seems sneaky. This makes the audience laugh but also question if being obedient really makes someone good. In Persepolis, good and evil are much clearer.

The evil is the government that controls people with fear and strict rules. The good is Marjane’s family and others who try to stay free and true to themselves. Since it’s based on real life, the audience feels empathy and sees the real cost of oppression.

Both works show how society decides what’s good and bad. Shakespeare uses comedy to play with those ideas, while Satrapi shows how serious and personal the struggle can be

In "The Taming of the Shrew," characters are perceived as good and evil throughout the play. The first character who was perceived as evil was Katharine. In the early acts of the play, she is depicted as fiercely outspoken, easily angered, and frequently uses violence. Furthermore, she consistently challenges societal norms, and her aggressive wit makes her unattractive to potential suitors. For instance, in Act 2, scene 1, "She strikes him," So the audience may immediately perceive this as violence and against the social norms during this time. Additionally, in this scenario, Petruchio was seen as the good due to his wanting to marry the "shrew" because no one else would.

However, later in the book, the roles are immediately reversed, in which Petruchio is perceived as "evil" and Katherine is seen as "good." For instance, in Act 4, scene 2, Petruchio claims, "She eat no meat today, nor none shall eat. / Last night she slept not, nor tonight she shall not." Here, Pertuchio uses control as violence, portraying him as the bad guy. Hisharsh and calculated actions against Katherine, depriving her of food and sleep in an effort to "tame" her. He compares his actions to training a wild hawk. While he tries to explain this emotional manipulation as an act of love for her own benefit, it’s evident to both Katherine and the audience that he is making her suffer real pain and suffering. This ultimately makes the audience show some pity toward her due to how Pertuchio is treating her.

Now, in Persepolis, good and evil are also present and represented, but not through character but through color. Marjane Satrapi employs the powerful interplay of black and white to illustrate the themes of good and evil. The white reflects the characters who stand by Marji, while the black tones represent the oppressive regime she faces. In the narrative, "good" characters, exemplifying Marji's values of personal freedom and revolutionary spirit, are symbolized by white. This includes the protesters, Marji’s family, and allies, who embody this side. On the contrary, the "evil" forces, which are the military and the regime led by Ayatollah Khomeini, are portrayed in black. This color choice highlights their oppressive and hostile presence from Marji's viewpoint. The effect this has on the audience is that it leaves them with a better understanding of who the good and evil are in the book.
