In unit 1, Health and safety in construction,we focused on health and safety and the building regulations. We learned about how and why they were in place. We learned regs such as RIDDOR and HASAWA and part a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h. This can relate to unit 3, Design principles, with the design principles and process of design, this is because in the early stages of designing a build or planning a project, the construction team inspect the health and safety of the site and ensure that the construction team meets the building regs. The planning stage of a project also links into unit 2 , Material science principles, because when planning the structural engineer will look at the suitable materials needed for the project, which links back into unit 3 with site inspectors looking at the ground and the surrounding areas and after this the structural engineer will choose suitable materials and construction format. Which finally links into unit 9 , relationship management, because the relationship of the construction team while planning is extremely important to have good communication to ensure the whole project falls together as planned... especially with the client, site inspector and structural engineer to ensure safety and stability with the project to make it successful.

Units 2 & 5 (Construction Science Principles and Sustainabillity Principles) both link together. Unit 2 is about the materials used in the construction industry. Unit 5 is about what materials and methods are useful for the long term impact in the construction industry. Thee two units have a connection because they both include materials. In a real case scenario, if i wanted to know which materials i need to use to construct a building with a high tensile strength and i know it will last long, i will have to consider and analyse both units to find an answer. Both of these units are important because without even one of them, the construction industry would be a failure due to the lack of sustainable resources and specific materials for specific tasks.

Unit 1 links with all units covered so far, this is because health and safety is an intricate and essential part of construction, which is required in any form or work carried out, even if its just to take something in consideration.

How does unit 1 link with unit 2?

Construction science Principles and Health and Safety are two key stages in the building/construction process, which have a symbiotic relationship. Both units need each other, in order for the other one to run smoothly, so that everything goes to plan, it is safe, and a good build is formed of it. For example, in Unit 1, health and safety regulations and legislations are discusses, informing workers on all the different aspects of Health and Safety that they need to acknowledge, in order to protect the health and wellbeing of co-workers and members of the public. This crosses over into Science Principles as health and safety is considered throughout all aspects within construction. If health and safety legislations aren't followed while involved in construction, then people's lives are at risk.

How does Unit 1 link with Unit 3?

Unit 1 and Unit 3 also gel together well. In Unit 3, when considering designs, the design has to be safe and well thought up before plans are even made, to make sure that people's safety isn't at risk, because of a bad design. An example of this is the Hyatt Regency Disaster, when a bridge walkway collapsed killing many people, due to a design flaw. This proves that health and safety needs to be heavily considered, so that companies know that their buildings are structurally sound, and safe.

How does Unit 1 link with Unit 9?

One example of the way that these two units link, is when an Employer is doing tool box talks with their employees. The employer could make this interesting, fun, yet informative and constructive. Having talks like these gives employees to engage amongst each other as a group, team building, and working together to ensure that health and safety is always adhered to.

In unit 5 u can see that there’s a lot of heat loss through the house such as Up to 35% heat loss through uninsulated walls / Up to 25% heat loss through the roof / Up to 10% heat loss through windows/ Up to 15% heat loss through doors/ Up to 15% heat loss through floors which is the sustainability of the building and this links to unit 3 construction design principles as with the correct design they can put insulation such as blue jean insulation. And this links to both unit 6 and unit 7 as unit 6 has the measurements therefore this would link as the builder would want to know how much of a gap to make so people can put insulation. But this all thinks to health and safety which is unit 1 as the builders need to know all the health and safety regulations with all the part such as RIDDOR HASAWA and more and all parts such as fire safety etc. this is important as they need to learn and follow the legislations to do the house which is the first part of building the house.

In unit one, we looked at the health and safety in construction and the laws they have to follow, we studied the regulations and why and when they got put in place. Which helps improve the working standards, time on the job and how the employer has legal responsibility for the employees. This links with unit 3, design, as it needs to be a structurally stable design and with a good design it can make it safer as some parts can be made off site and done by machine making the design a key part of health and safety.

Unit three also overlaps with unit 2 as the design of the building can only be as good as the material and the way its built, this is because the science principles link in with the use of the correct material and how strong certain materials have to be.

Unit 9 relationship management is when the communication of the client and workers to allow others to get the best work possible done. Which links with unit 3 again as being able to communicate with the client, suppliers and architects. This allows the designer to fully understand what is needed and wanted by the client to allow the building to be safe, functional and what the client asks for.

In unit one (Health and Safety in Construction), we studied regulations in construction, for example how Part B fire safety plays are in construction. This is carried over to unity 3 ( Construction Design Principles), where we learn how to design a building to specific regulations, such as fire, for example Part B explains how a building should be designed for easy access in a fire. Furthermore, the regulations links to unit 2.2 (Material Science Principles)Where certain materials should be used to meet regulations such as insulated plasterboard to prevent thermal bridging (Part L). It’s important that the client has a good relationship with the design team to get a great understanding of how the client wants the project to be designed (Relationships in construction and (Construction Design Principles).

A connection between units 1 and 2 could be topic 9 of unit 1 (emergency procedures for unsafe situations) and Topic 5 of unit 2 (Heat principles). The connection between these two topics show through fire extinguishes and their uses and methods of heating a building. The methods of heating a building are electric wall-mounted convection heaters, electric floor-heating elements, wet floor-heating systems, wet heat-emitting systems and ground or air source heat pumps. A couple of these types of ways to heat up a building could possibly catch fire on the building and the different types of fire extinguishes will need to be known and all extinguishes should be in the building to make sure that any emergency a fire extinguisher for the right emergency can be treated correctly.

Unit 1 and Unit 3 Link

These two units link with part regulations as Part L is the main regulation (Conservation of Fuel and Power).
