In the movie it looked like the mom was healthier from the way she looked and spoke. She also had hair and in the real life people with that sickness (cancer) wouldn't have that much hair or hair at all in this case. Which teaches Connor that once the Apothecary leaves he can't ask for nothing else since he wanted the Apothecary to leave in the first place.
The tale with the prince who killed his fiance just to be the new king and blamed it on the the past queen and convinced the town she was a witch and tried to execute her.
