These two artists were both 2D painting artist.

Zhang was famous for his ink art, expressing landscapes. He used both Japanese coloring techniques and Chinese ink art techniques.

Saeki was famous for his oil painting. He studied the base of oil painting in France, and he developed it by himself

These two artists, both learned a new art style from foreign country.

Zhang Daqian tried to integrated it with his own country's traditional art style.

On the other hand, Saeki developed what he learned by him self.

So their most difference is that Zhang developed his art with traditions, and on the other hand, Saeki looked for something new.

Their common fact is that these two both express things that are not living thing.

Drawing an inorganic substance needs a very different techniques from drawing a living things, and they are both master for this.

Week 1

This week I tried my very first glitch art. We all took picture of ourselves with photobooth, and hacked the image with hexfiend.

The letters "hexfiend" showed was random lines of random letters. It was too unfamiliar for me, and I did not know what was going on.

This was actually the information of my image. These random letters were telling computers which pixel should have which color, and this was creating the actual image.

I realized that images are very complicated, and amazed because these are all in our daily lives now.

During the class, we changed the parts of random letters, so that the image will be glitched.

I found this difficult, because I cannot control anything. I can just delete or add something, and glitch happens. I could not always have result I wanted.

However, I could create some awesome glitch arts, which are the 5 above. Those kind of art are really special, and I thought this can only be done by glitches.

My mashup

This time I focused on "colors" and "composition".

My main concept was "marching frog"

My background picture, which is from Zhang Daqian, is having light blue color. My objects at the front are having bright and vivid colors, so that they stands out from the background. I glitched the landscape picture from Daqian, because I had a feeling of wrongness when I used the picture without glitching. I thought it is because the picture was too beautiful and calm. It did not fit my mash up with lots of colors. After I glitched the picture, I can say now I have a harmony created by those vivid colors and composed color.

I used many Poison Dart Frogs in my picture. This is because I liked the vivid colors of them. I put the one with original color in the center, so that it attract people's attention. I also placed some more frogs around, and I made it look like a trooper going on a riot. This concept matches with the title, which is "frogs be ambitious". I have also changed the colors of each frogs, so that the picture doesn't look so monotony, but i did not change the color tone.

I have also changed the colors of my face. I used vivid colors here as well, to have contrast between the background. I changed the color of my face, but I did not change the color's brightness. I used blue for my lips so that the whole face doesn't look monotone.

The body of mine is from Dr.Clark. I thought this matches my concept, because it looks like Dr.Clark is guiding frogs when I put it on the end of my picture. I changed the colors, so that it matches with my frogs. However, the colors of Dr.Clark is not as vivid as frogs are. It is because the main objects are "frogs" and not the body. I have also decided the title from Dr.Clark's quote, which is "boys be ambitious". I used my sense of humor to entertain people.

Week 2

This week we researched about glitch arts and QR codes.

I haven't really thought about these before the classes, but I now know that these things help us lot in digital ways.

We all watched a case in a foreign school where teachers use QR code for education. The kids there were very motivated, by the QR codes.

In other words, these digital techniques are not only the tools for carrying information, but they can be used in many other kinds of things.

Art is the one of the thing which QR codes can be used. So from next week, we are going to create one artwork including QR codes.

Week3

This week, we started to create our artworks with QR code. I think "having a QR code" is not a rule to restrict us, but it gives us wider ways to express ourselves.

We all need to think how we can combine the QR code into our works, but also what informations should we put inside the codes.

Having some meaningful information into the code, will give 2 different impression to people who watch our works. One from visual, one from code.

So this is why we can have wider range of expression by having QR code.

I put a sentence saying "keep calm and eat sushi". This is because my work's concept was "Japan".

Week4

This was the week for creating the mashup, which is going to be our final product.

This project haven't got any rules, and we can do what we want with digital tools, such as photoshops and illustrator.

I found that it is also difficult to decide what am I going to create, if there were no rules.

I realized that my inspiration needs to be very innovative to create some creative artwork from no rule.

Overall, this unit was somewhat challenging for me. This was mainly because I thought Digital Devices haven't got any relationships with art, even though I learned design with technologies. I learned that computers are really useful tools to design some product, but I thought these are not for expressing ourselves.

However, after I finished my unit, I know how I can apply those techniques for digital devices into art. Now I know how I can modify things and create my own thing, that represent my own identity. Now I can create my own artwork from nothing, or by modifying existing products.

I think I have learned very useful skills during this unit, because nowadays, many things are done on digital devices. Furthermore, people are losing their own characteristics in this digitalized society. I think if I can express myself using digital devices, I can appeal myself more effectively in this society now. The skills I learned during this unit are definitely going to useful when I go out to the society, to keep myself "myself".

I have also acquired the idea that digital technologies can be used in many other ways. Those techniques people developed using many years, are now very useful and they can be applicable to many ways. For example, we all looked at a case where teachers use QR codes to motivate children. We also use a lot of technologies in Tamagawa as an education. I realized that way people use and see technologies are very biased, and actually technology is very wide now. I hope I can fully use technology in the future.
