My Thoughts

Like any other student in school, I tend to not like reading books that are assigned for me to read. It took me a bit to warm up to this book, but once I did I was glad. It's definitely not something that I would read on my own, but it opened up my eyes to many aspects of music that I had really never thought of until read. There were many things that I found interesting and not really anything problematic to read. But overall an interesting take and breath of fresh air that makes me listen to music in a different way.

Best Parts

Like stated in the panel to the left, there were many aspects in this book that I really enjoyed. For instance the subject of speed really interested me, showing how the speed of the song can really have an effect on the audience and music alike. Or even how silence can bring out true emotion within a piece as well as dramatic effect if one so wishes for it. These two were the main points that I took out of the book.

New Listening

To me music is a big part of my life. My mom likes to say that I have an ear for good music. But although she always told me this, I never really thought of myself having a good ear. Ratliff really gave me an array of chapters that allowed me to educate myself on what the proper terms were and what they meant. It was like going through a song and describing all the bits and pieces that made it so great. I guess that's why the course is called music appreciation. Now when I listen to music I can easily point out every piece of different sections that make it.
