What new skills did you learn? 
  • Our teamwork skills were definitely put to the test. A lot of us were put into groups with people that we might have not talked to, or even met before. It was a great time to bond and get to know each other. 
What feelings/thoughts seemed the most strong at the time? 
  • We are all blessed to be at a university that has workers who are paid to clean up the area so it can look and feel clean all the time. These inner city places however do not have that same luxury and you don’t really understand the extent of it until you go there and see it first hand. It is a little surprising at first, all the trash spots and bottles and waste on the ground but they don’t have people to clean it up and it’s also clear that dumpster trucks most likely don’t run these routes 
How was your experience different than you expected? 
  • We expected the job to take a lot more time and was not expecting the cleanliness to be as poor as it was. 
What impacted the way you worked/viewed the experience? 
  • We saw how these people lived, looking at all the trash gave us a little insight on how the people that stayed there lived their lives. We are spoiled to be at a place like Cincinatti, a place that’s always clean. And that definitely impacted the way that I was working and viewed the experience. 
What was accomplished during this time?
  • Walked around and cleaned up the city in groups to build chemistry. 
What are some of the needs/pressing issues in the community served? 
  • Dirty, needed to be cleaned and picked up thoroughly

Once divided up we were given a preselected route by park workers, and then supplied with trash bags, trash grabbers, high resolution vests, gloves, and donuts. And then we were tasked with walking your given route and picking up as much trash as you can, and then leaving your bags on the side of the road when full, in order for them to be picked up. The area we walked was around 4 blocks, we observed heroin needles, candy wrappers, large piles of trash, empty alcohol containers, piles of tires, a lot of masks too. The issues addressed is the wide spread litter, and hope to keep a newer park clean for longer. The results were that we were able to make a measurable difference in the scenery of the park and surrounding areas, because of our work throughout the morning. Some things of particular notice were the amount of alcohol and just random trash that was found, obvious that it had been around for months, if not years, with really nothing being done about it. The root of all the problems and issues is us as people leaving behind trash that could be thrown away.

What kinds of activities are currently taking place in the community related to this project? 
There are other clean up projects as well as organizations that are focused on environmental protection.

What contributes to the success of projects like this?
I think that teamwork is most important as well as having friends with you to make it more enjoyable.

 What hinders success? What learning occurred for you in this experience? 
I think that going into service with a bad attitude/closed mind will hinder your experience.
 I learned that our community is being ran down by litter/trash everywhere.

How can you apply this learning? 
You can apply this to learning by thinking about all the trash that gets left behind in parks and streets

What would you like to learn more about, related to this project or issue? 
I would like to learn more about how many more groups of people do this on a weekly or monthly basis.
What follow-up is needed to address any challenges or difficulties?
There is no follow up needed other than possibly going back to the park and seeing if more trash is there.
What information can you share with your peers or community volunteers? 

If you were in charge of the project, what would you do to improve it? Different start time or do a 
Day where the weather was nice.

If you could do the project again, what would you do differently? Pick a different organization to
Work with.

What would “complete” the service? 
Better weather !!!
