Alice In Wonderland Theme

This recreation of the queen of hearts from Alice in Wonderland, is very much unique and is a good representation of the theme. Instantly from a first glace you are able to see where this hair design has come from and the inspiration behind it. For a fantasy hair design to really live up to its expectations the person creating the look has to make sure that they are using products and accessories that aren't seen in everyday hair looks. In this image, it is clear to see that the artist has either used a wig piece or extensions to give the illusion of thick backcombed locks that have been tamed around the the crown placed on top of the head. It is also clear to see that there is a very distinct colour theme of red, white and black. There has also been two bent horn like accessories added which gives it more demention and a fantasy theme. I think that this hair design sticks to the fantasy theme in more ways than one. The first reason i feel that this design is working correctly with the theme is because the hair look is not something that would be worn by people every day, it is a very unique style that would stand out on day to day life. This hair style would have been created by excessive back combing and hair spray. The accessories could have been applied to this look by using kirby grips. However i feel that kirby grips may not be strong enough to hold some heavy pieces to the head therefore sturdier equipment may of had to of been used for this look. The hair on this look is red, is it unlikely that all the hair on this design is the models own, it looks as though some is hair extensions, these could have been applied in numerous ways. Personally i feel that the hair could have been added by being sown in or clipped into place depending on how long this design was intended to stay in the models hair. As the hair is red it would have been hard to direct colour match therefore, the models own hair could have been sprayed with a red canned spray. You would have to apply this carefully to make sure that the spray colour doesn't transfer to anywhere where you do not want it to go. When creating a look like this there are different things that you need to take into consideration. For an alice in wonderland themed hair design you would need to create a design that is weird and wonderful. It has to be very much out there and complex, not just something anyone could recreate. The queen of hearts is a weird unique character who prides herself on being different, therefore when recreating a look to resemble her it is very important that is is something bright, big and different. Another thing that you would have to take into consideration when completing a look like this would be how you are going to apply all the different accessories onto the head. As these pieces will tend to be heavier than just the natural hair could hold, you would have to take into consideration how you would make them stand on their own without hurting the models head or sagging down. If i were to complete this fantasy hair piece i would too, like the photo has here, add more hair extension pieces, to make the hair thicker. I would also back comb the hair to make it more dense and allow room for the accessories to sit on.

Unicorn Theme

The final theme that i am looking into is a futuristic 'unicorn theme'. I really liked researching different images for this theme as i feel like the fantasy hair design styles are the type of design that i would go for. The image below is the design that i liked best, and if i were the ever create a unicorn themed fantasy hair style this would be the one that i'd take inspiration from. The image below shows the stereotypical unicorn horn in the centre of the head. From further viewing i can see that long white hair extensions have been added to create a 'mane' like feel with flowers and feathers adorning the hair design. I think that this hair design identifies the theme well for many different reasons. The first most obvious reason is the unicorn's horn. I think that the way they have added the simple white coned horn make's the whole design look classy and elegant, it is simple in its colours but detailed with the design accessories. Another reason i think this design identifies the theme well is the way that the person who has created this style has made sure that the hair is extra long, much longer than your average person would have. This identifies with the unicorn theme because in most images of unicorns they always have long free flowing manes that look beautiful and unrealistic, which is what a unicorn is. Not real. Finally, i feel that this design identifies the theme well because of the colours used. The majority of unicorns that you see are a beautiful white colour, with some additional soft colours added to make certain accessories stand out more. This design has made sure to use the traditional white colour and incorporated a gold flower in the side of the hair piece to make it appear a little more 3d and stand out more for the theme, which i feel it has succeeded in. This style has been created by adding different pieces of synthetic hair to the models of natural hair. The hair has then been curled using a curling wand and brushed out to create more of a loose natural wave. I feel that it has been been bas combed into a almost 'tail' like shape which you can see in the image to make it appear like the unicorns mane/tail. The models own hair has been scraped back at the sides and hidden under the added hair, this makes it appear to look again like the unicorns main as almost like a mohawk style. To secure all of this in place a lot of hairspray would have had to of been used to ensure that there were no loose strands and to make sure no pieces fell out. Clips would also have had to of been used to make sure that the flowers added stayed in the hair as well as the feathers. I also feel that another product that may have been used was coloured hair spray to make the hair as white as possible. The image that i have chosen has clearly been created for a photo shoot as you can tell from the black background. As this has been created for a photo shoot purpose it is extremely important that the hair stylist who created this look spent a lot of time ensuring the finished look was perfect , there there were no loose hairs showing, as with a black ground and white hair these would clearly show up a lot. Another thing that a stylist would have to consider when creating this look for a photoshoot would be to make sure it looks unique and different from hair designs that we see everything day. For photoshoots, the hair and makeup are the most important thing as that is what people in the fashion world focus on the most, if the hair doesn't stand out and isn't different the stylist won't be recognised and won't be as credited for the fantasy hair design style they have created.

Butterfly Nature Theme

Another theme that i have chosen to investigate is a 'butterfly' themed hair design. The image that i have chosen was taken from google and appears to be from a photo shoot. The photo below is a quite simple but beautiful style, the hair has been pinned away from the face and extended higher in a upwards direction. The hair has been elegantly pinned into place making it appear free flowing and beautiful. Sitting on top of the hair are an array of butterflies in different shapes and sizes, they all appear to be flying to and from the hair. I personally that this style identifies the theme well and is a look that could be recreated by other people rather easily if you know how to do it. The most obvious accessory that shows this theme off is the butterflies that have been added, however rather than just adding plain butterflies whoever has created this design has chosen to add pretty colourful flies, each colour that works well with the theme. If you look closely to the photo you can also see some small flower's that have been aded to the hair piece, this further extends the identified theme of nature and wildlife and also gives the impression that the hair is is fact a home for the butterflies, not just a hair extension piece. This hair style could have been created by using chicken wire. By using chicken wire the stylist would have been able to get their exact required shape and then of been able to secure it into place using a glue gun. To make the piece heavier and for it to sit onto the head they could have added newspaper and then placed some cardboard underneath the hair piece to protect the models head. Before applying it to the models head a hair stylist would have had to wrap hair extension strands neatly round the cone like shape that had been created and stick it down using a glue gun again, the stylist would have then added the already made butterflies and it would then of been applied to the models own hair. To make sure that the piece was secure i think the the stylist would have wrapped the models own hair into a bun and placed the piece on top of this and secured it with lots of hair grips. The image below has been used for a photoshoot, therefore wouldn't need to be as durable as it would for a theatre or production. As it was create for a photoshoot it wouldn't be on the models hair for too long, therefore if it were to be uncomfortable it wouldn't strain on them for as long as it would if on stage, it also doesn't need to be as secure as it would for a production, as the model is only standing still and being photographed where as in theatre the model would be walking around a lot and the hair piece may run the risk of falling off. However i feel the the stylist would still need to take into consideration how the model is feeling with the hair piece on. After all the accessories would have been added on the hair piece would most likely become quite heavy and hard, therefore the stylist should always make sure that the model is comfortable and it isn't hurting them in any way as this could affect the purpose of the hair piece and stop them performing to their best ability. Another thing that you would have to take into consideration when creating a hair design like this one would be the weight of it again. However this time ensuring that the hair piece actually stays up right and the models head and doesn't sag or fall. To do this the stylist would have to make sure it is secured properly and that is it a good weight, not to light and not to heavy.

Snow Queen

The second theme that i have chosen to look into is the 'Snow Queen' and i am looking mainly at the photo below, of an interpretation of a snow queen. The image below shows a rather simplistic hair style died white and a hair piece added on the top of the head to make it appear like a crown like shape. I personally feel that although this snow queen hair design is quite simple and not using as many skills, is still effective and allows people to be aware of the theme they have chosen. However with this image i have chosen i find that the skin colour and makeup also help along with being informed of what the theme is, i feel that if the hair was on it's own then the theme may be slightly harder to determine. The hair piece that has been added has helped meet the identified theme i feel. I think this because the hair piece has been incrusted with diamond's covering the whole of the piece. A queen is known for wearing expensive jewels and always wear's a crown. Whoever has created this hair design they have been clever and used both diamonds and crowns together to help with the visual image of a snow queen. It helps with the theme and indiction of what theme it is that they are trying to portray. Another reason it is a good representation of the chosen theme is the way that the hair has been styled. The hair has been wrapped around it's self almost in a deadlock like way and then been sprayed silver. By styling the hair this way it makes it appear frozen, like the hair was originally curly and beautiful but the cold weather has frozen it into a certain way, again identifying with the 'snow queen' theme. The way that the hair has been sprayed into a sliver colour also makes it appear frozen, the hair being this colour makes it look like icicles on the hair, it gives another illusion of a snow queen without actually using any other hair accessories, which is a clever way to create a design like this one. The hair for this look may have been created by taking small sections of hair, parting the section into two and then twisting. The hair stylist may then have taken heated straighteners and placed the hair between the two sides and pressed down for a few seconds and repeated this all the way down the hair and throughout the rest of the sections. Once all this hair was straightened the hair stylist may then have taken hairspray and sprayed this very closely to the hair, this would not have only set the hair into the deadlock style spirals but it would have also given it the crusty look like you can see on the model in the photo below, when the sliver hair spray was added you would have been given a look like you can see below. The image i have chosen was clearly used for a photo shoot, therefore would have needed to be created to last under studio lights. The hair stylist would have had to of made sure that the products they were using wouldn't have melted under the lights, so for example they wouldn't have been able to use gel as this would melt under the studio lights and not be secure enough. When creating this look again i would have to be carful on what products i used on the model to ensure that they didn't melt under the photography studio lights. I would also need to put into consideration how i secured the diamond hair piece. This would be quite possibly heavy, therefore i would need to make sure that i used the right products to secure this into place without them showing up on camera. I could use kirby grips, however i feel that this may be quite visible in the photos, more visible than using other products for example if i were to sow the hair piece into the models own hair, this is less likely to be seen as it is a thinner material and i could wrap it around as many times as i wanted to make sure it was secure.

Snake Animal Theme

For the fourth theme i have chosen another animal inspired one, however this image is a 'snake theme'. The image below shows hair curled into spirals with snake heads coming from different angeles of the hair, a contrast to the other pretty butterfly theme. I think this hair style identifies the chosen theme well as gives a good representation of the theme. Personally i feel that this fantasy hair design is very effective and quite scary, which is how i think it intends to make you feel. This style identifies with the theme in more ways than one. The first reason i feel this is down to the way that the hair has been styled. The hair it's self has been curled and all been put up, although it looks only simple the hair has been pinned in a way that almost gives it a snake like feel. The hair is waving in and out of other pieces and gives the illusion of a snakes actual body when it slithers. This is a clever way of creating the theme. Another way that i feel the theme has been identified is with the snake heads being added. Like i said earlier the hair has been waved to mimic a snakes body and the snake heads have been added to the ends of each curl to make them appear connected. This again shows people viewing the image the theme. This hair may have been created by using added hair to make it appear more thicker. The hair could have then been curled and brushed out creating a wave style. I think that the texture of the hair on the image below looks like it has been sprayed quite heavily with hairspray and then pinned into the shape like design. I think the snake heads would have been added quite easily and most probably have grips on the end of them to secure them into place. This image below looks like it has been created for a photoshoot, therefore needs to be perfect as every detail will be picked up on camera. As you can see from the photo their are some loose strands around the hair, as this hair style isn't a perfect one, it looks like this has been done on purpose to make it appear edgy and unclean, much like a snakes habitat would be. If this were for production there are other things that the stylist would have to ensure they do, for example not use products that will melt under the stage lights. When creating this hair design things that have to be taken into consideration are; how the snake heads are going to be secured into the hair to make sure they are sturdy and last well, you also need to make sure that the curls are sprayed properly so that they stay in the required position and down fall or become loose throughout the shoot, to make sure this is the case a stylist should spray with hairspray and pin them into place with strong clips.
==========================================================
A good detailed analysis on the fantasy hair design. Detailing suitable examples and way to re-create the style. Well don Jess.
Tutor: Miki Evue
=========================================================

African Theme

Another theme that i have chosen for fantasy hair designs is an african theme design. The image below shows very tight traditional african braids, also known as cornrows. These have then been wrapped around the top of the head and secured in some way. Other braids have been added to create a crown like design and inside this seems to be some kind of fruit. This hair design identifies the chosen theme well i feel. The first reason i feel this way is down the the braids that have been chosen to be used. These cornrow braids are a traditional african hair style, worn by thousands in Africa, therefore indicates straight away what the theme of this hair design is and where the inspiration for it came from. Another reason i feel this identifies the chosen theme well is the way that inside the crown like design is what appears to be fruit, it is well known around the world that in Africa more than anywhere else in the world, the traditional africans carry their resources on top of there head, usually in a basket and balance them. They do this because of the rural areas that they live it tends to take a long time to walk to get their food and water and having to multitask is just something that they do. By the designer of this hair style choosing to add the fruit into the basket again identifies the chosen the theme in a clever, unique way. To create this look the hair stylist would have had to corn row the hair. They would start this by first wetting the haired making it slightly damp. Then they would have to section the hair and start to cornrow, securing it with a elastic band. This would have to be repeated to all of the hair. The crown style hair piece looks as though it has been added to hair, therefore the stylist would have had to take a corn row and wrap this around the piece to secure it. Although their isn't much skill, products or techniques used in this design, it would be very time consuming. This image that i have found looks like it has been taken from a catwalk of some kind, therefore the stylist would have to make sure that the hair is extremely secure as well as neat as it would be getting photographed from all different angels and any imperfection to it would be seen. With this look and with working on catwalks there are certain things you would have to take into consideration. This look especially concentrates on the crown on top of the head with the fruit inside. The stylist would have to consider how to ensure that the fruit is secure and doesn't run the risk of falling out of the hair piece when the model is walking down the catwalk. To do this the stylist could previously stick all the pieces of fruit going into the hair piece together and then apply it as one whole piece, this way it would still look like they are fruit and separated but they are intact more secure than if they hadn't done this.
