In the near future, food waste has reached crisis levels. Your school is chosen as part of an international “Food Guardians” program to test solutions. Over one year, you must investigate, experiment, and inspire your community to cut waste by at least 50%. If they succeed, their solutions will be shared worldwide

Ministry of Agriculture: The lady was very passive about the situation and her answers to our questions. She was always reassuring us that everything is fine and wasn’t really as invested. She gave very general information so I didn’t really learn that much. She didn’t really give us many suggestions or something we can do to fix the food waste issue in our school. It was the first interview so I didn’t really know what to expect but it helped me realize that I need to be more pushy and ask more in depth questions.

Food Sharing Association: The guy was really invested and was super nice. He answered all of our questions really well. He gave us examples and ideas of what we can do and he even agreed to collaborate with us and help us out if anything. He mention the EcoBox and was very encouraging when we mentioned wanting change in our school. He also gave us more detail and information on how different associations in Luxembourg work.

Canteen Staff: The guys there were informative. I learned a lot more about what was going on in our school. The food waste in secondary is the highest, around 300 kg in a month, then its the primary with around 200 kg and then its the teachers, who don’t waste that much and have special boxes they can put their left over food into. The vegetarian lunch is the one that is wasted the most, and the vegetables are the one food that is left most often on peoples plates. The staff were very cooperative, and were open to working with us and hearing out ideas and solutions. They also gave us the contact of a person who is higher up and knows more on the issue. This interview gave me a better idea of how the canteen works, who is in charge and what we can and can’t do.

Government

The lady showed us a perfect image of Luxembourg, as if there was no need to improve food waste. She said that the government has a goal to reach by 2030 and that we are already doing well, so there is no need to do more. One of the few things the government does is raise awareness about food waste. They also train chefs to reduce it, but they don’t advertise it enough.

I was surprised and disappointed because I thought the government was doing its best to reduce food waste. But it seems they think the situation is already good, so they don’t try hard to improve.

I agree that the situation of Luxembourg is better than other countries, but it still needs to improve.

Ms. Unsen, ministry:

The interview proved that the ministry isn’t that aware of the food crisis happening. She mentioned that Luxembourg’s goal was to diminuish food waste by 30% (which I didn’t know so it was a good information). She said that we’re “on a good path”, but clearly we have to do more to reach that goal.

She is in charge of the Anti Gaspi campaign, where she has a website but that really isn’t impactful and only has positive pictures on it. As for the campaign’s actions, it’s all very brief, they maybe organize a small something every now and then, not making a change.

For her, we have to impact our surroundings to change, let everyone know about food waste and how we can avoid it. But her suggestions weren’t all that, again. She proposed to put Anti gaspi stickers on cantine plates and to put a few posters around. That’s definitely going to change the situation!

What I did found good though and useful, was that they fund money to form staff (in cantines, restaurants etc.) to be aware of the waste. That way they know how to produce food and sell it in a sustainable way. We also know now, that we can get some financial support from them in case of a project we can come up with.

Food sharing:

This interview was more impactful than the one with Ms. Unsen. The guy we talked to was part of the Food sharing campaign, an association with volunteers, where the goal is obviously to prevent food waste, but especially amongst individuals (where there is the most food thrown away). They have different locations where anyone can leave food that they won’t use or take food that isn’t going to be used, so to make an exchange. Pretty cool I’d say.

He liked the idea of changing the habits in the cantine and said we can always contact him. For him, food waste is clearly a big deal where everyone as individuals have to act and be aware, so it’s different from the views of the ministry already. We talked about some solutions like self service, something like Too good to go, collect food after the day, do an eco box, maybe collaborate with the associated etc. He did say thought, that it’s not a good idea with punishing people or rewarding, as it’s something individuals have to start making on their own.

He also mentioned other schools trying to avoid food waste in their cantines by doing projects. So that’s pretty motivating for us, knowing we’re not the only ones.

I found it interesting when he said that it’s very hard to collect food from the supermarkets, which is understandable. But he still will be in contact with us, being open for any collaboration.
