Research and Planning

www.unsigned.com is a website for unsigned artists and bands to host their mp3s and get exposure. The website showcases unsigned artists, independent labels. The site itself helps unsigned artist to get recognition and promotes their music through the ability to download mp3s for free. Originally, we browsed www.unsigned.com to search for suitable track that secures the genre that we intend to encourage and introduce to our intended audience. We were allocated this platform for further use just to ensure that copyright issues were prevented and overcome. This was to protect us from repercussions that we could have encountered due to the idea of taking a track that hasn’t been permitted to use. However, after exploring the website thoroughly, we understood that there wasn’t musical material that we could visualise or see us utilising. We looked at genres such as alternative and indie, but unfortunately, they stereotypically encompassed the conventions of the rock genre, which is something we didn’t want to delve into as much. We believed that the lyrical and sound element should be easily represented into a music video in order for the production to be successful. Due to this, we had therefore changed where we collected the material to a different source; this was SoundCloud. SoundCloud is a music and podcast streaming platform that lets you listen to millions of songs from around the world. SoundCloud is an online audio distribution platform based in Berlin, Germany, that qualifies its users to upload, record, promote, and share their own musical creations.

Whilst constructing this production package, I have familiarised myself with modern technology to add significance and make my production look professional and much like a real one. I have been using a website called blogger which allows me to showcase all my coursework on it. Whilst being assigned different tasks that need completing, we are told consistently to incorporate the use of different media technology software’s such as Powtoon, Prezi, and Scribd etc. These are online software’s that enable your work to be displayed in different ways. Powtoon is a presentation where you can add images, voice overs, information and transitions to the presentation to make flow together very well, it’s is a very interactive source for presenting coursework. Prezi is almost like an animated slideshow presentation that lets you place all your information on it and you can design it the way you want it to look, it’s a creative and advanced software to use. Scribd is one of my favourite because I think it looks neat and presentable. Scribd is quite similar to Microsoft Word and displays all your information just like word, however it’s once you have put it on your blog, you are able to scroll, using the mouse to get to all the pages that have been worked on. YouTube: This website was used to search for music videos. This site provides knowledge on all areas, especially media. It shows us video on what exactly were looking for. This made it simpler for me to analyse certain music promos. Another great thing about YouTube is that it’s a great way to get access to tutorials on how to use software’s such a Moovly, Padlet, Powtoon etc. Also, YouTube effectively lets us upload our own video on there; we had to do this for our preliminary video and of course our music production.

When contacting our chosen artists, we were going to Instagram direct message the band, however we later discovered that they had split up and stopped collaborating together to produce music. We wanted to use Instagram because we acknowledged the fact that it was a common social media network that would fulfil our aim. However, due to the fact that Ivy and Gold shared an Instagram, twitter, SoundCloud and other social media accounts, we had to search for an individual account which was Racheal’s email address. Therefore, we wrote an email regarding the use of her and Jamie’s track (The Town). We explained how we were A Level student that require consent to use their song. Fortunately, she was more than happy to give us permission to imitate her song and use it to support our coursework.

When filming our music video, we had to consider some things to ensure the best footage for out promo. In order to get the greatest footage, we had to lean and become familiar with the canon DSLR camera which we had used before anyway prior to this production, we had used it beforehand for our thriller opening. Practice shots were used to help us get a better understanding of the quality of our shots and to see if they would be useful in our music video. A tripod was used to benefit the value of the shots as it guaranteed that the stability and professionalism was maintained throughout. Not only this but our risk assessment played a large part in the considerations of our music video this is due to some of the props that were used in our music video. A chair was used to create high angles in the promo so we had a variety of shots and so the schema was refreshed for our audience instead of seeing the same shots throughout. A knife and the smoke bombs were vital to list on our risk assessment as we were in the public eye and open for anyone to approach us in the woods, thereby some people could have been affected and so we thought it is necessary to categorise these props as a risk so we had addressed the situation affectively as well as ensuring the public’s safety as well as our own.
