I Nasoni - the characteristic fountains of Rome

Established in 1874 by an idea of then Mayor Luigi Pianciani and Alderman Rinazzi to provide free drinking water in the center and townships and to give vent to the water supply, the drinking fountains were made of cast iron, were about 120 cm high (47 in), weighed about 100 kg (220 lbs), and had three dragon-shaped spouts. The water ended its fall into the sewer pipe through a grate placed at street level.

In later years, the design of the drinking fountains was changed: the three ornate spouts gave way to a single smooth spout whose shape is the origin of the nickname "nasone" (literally "big nose").

A few dragon-shaped spouts can still be found in Piazza della Rotonda, in Via di San Teodoro, behind the Roman Forum, and in Via delle Tre Cannelle.

The nozzle of all drinking fountains has a small hole at the top. By plugging the main outlet of the nozzle with a finger, the water gushes upward; a little trick, and drinking is easier and more hygienic.

Today, there are almost 2,500 Roman "nasoni" and the water they dispense is very fresh because of the continuous flow, and it is the same water distributed in the homes of Romans for over 100 years.

Did you know that in Rome there is an almost unknown little fountain that stands right on the side of one of the most famous fountains in the world?
It's the Fontanella degli Innamorati and it is located on the right side of the Trevi Fountain!

The architect Nicola Salvi, who had been commissioned to design the Trevi Fountain by Pope Clement XII, wanted to equip the monumental fountain with these two spouts to enable people to access the pure and healthy water of the Acqua Vergine aqueduct, which was otherwise unreachable.

According to an ancient legend, couples who drink together from this fountain will remain in love (and faithful) forever.
This was a ritual repeated in the past whenever a couple was forced to separate due to the departure of the beloved for military service. The night before the departure, the two lovers would go to the Lovers' Fountain: the girl would fill two never-before-used glasses at the spring and hand one to her beloved. After drinking together, the glasses would be smashed to seal their love pact and to ensure the beloved's safe return from the front.

Fabricius Bridge connects Tiber Island to the left bank of the Tiber, that is, to the S.Angelo district.
It is the oldest bridge in Rome and probably replaced a pre-existing wooden one; the present one was built in 62 B.C. by the "curator viarum" Lucius Fabricius, as recalled by the inscriptions in large letters engraved on the arches: "L(UCIUS) FABRICIUS C(AI) F(ILIUS) CUR(ATOR) VIAR(UM) FACIUNDUM COERAVIT," or "Lucius Fabricius, son of Caius and curator of roads, had built."

There is also a legend that hovers over this bridge and it revolves around the diatribe between the four architects commissioned by Sixtus V to restore the bridge. The Pope at the end of the work condemned them to be beheaded by having a monument made with four heads in a single block of marble: this is why the bridge is known as the four-headed bridge.

The Fountain of the Books in Rome was made in 1927 and is one of 9 neighborhood fountains in Rome by artist Pietro Lombardi.

The street on which the Fountain of Books stands today was once called "via dell'Università" because the ancient Sapienza University building (later moved to the Trastevere area), now home to the State Archives, stood nearby.
The Fountain of Books is presented inside a niche with a deer head in the center, the symbol of the Sant'Eustachio district, with four huge books resting on side shelves. From the two ancient books and the bookmark-shaped spouts gushes water, as a symbol of "knowledge that flows" without ever stopping. Finally, towering above the work is the heraldic symbol of the Medici family, owners of the historic Palazzo Madama, in front of the fountain.

Ah, there's a mistake! The mistake is the horizontal engraving in the center of the fountain, namely "S. EVSTACCHIO - R IV", but the Rione Sant' Eustachio is actually the number VIII and not the IV.
Someone must have been confused and, not knowing how to correct the inscription on the travertine, hoped it would not jump out too much.
