Pre-Production EDITOR ClickBait.

During Pre production Rachael and I worked heavily on creating a Website for the social media world inside our film 'ClickBait'
We worked separately from the rest of our group whilst they were rehearsing for their scenes.
We met with Connell to discuss the best way to create and design a website.
We decided to delegate roles for ourselves with in the website. Rachael was responsible for the layout of the website and I was responsible for the content inside it.
During the week I was able to produce a Logo for the website which I decided to call 'The Loop'.(Pictured below).
I created this on photoshop using different shape tools and adding a outer glow to them shapes.
I also created logos specific to each characters online personality.(pictured in separate post). I chose a lipstick for Leila's character as her brand is more 'beauty guru' based.
JJ's initials as his character is a bit less modest and self centered. The middle finger emoji for Billies character as she is edgy and opinionated and doesn't care about coming across as offensive. For Remmi's character I created a cartoon looking flower as her character is related to floral patterns and is more loving and approachable.
I then created channel intros for each character. This required editing and creating still images then putting them in to after effects to make the stills move in a distorted way to add movement to their title sequence then upload them onto premier pro to add their name title sequence.
I created Billies by putting 17 different coloured layers and shapes into Photoshop then playing the the opacity layers and glow layers of each shape. I then took it in to after effects and experimented with different movements then added her 'Loop' name over the top of this moving image.
I created JJ's in premier pro where I key framed his face to move up the screen and spin. This was inspired from several different YouTuber intros, Including Jenna Marbles, Jake Paul and David Dobrik, all successful Youtubers.
I created thumbnails for each characters videos using bright colours and grabbing captions. I spoke to the writer and director to discuss the vibe of the thumbnails and they told me to make them 'bitter yet endearing'. I used JJ's character to portray the bitterness of online personalities and captioned the thumbnails with "spilling the T" and "cancel Remmi" to show his spiteful side yet viewers would want to click on that video to gain an insight on what is going on between them characters and what JJ has to say about them.
I then put these thumbnails into premier pro and created gif's for each one so when the viewer hovers their mouse over the image of the thumbnail they can briefly see what happens in the video, this is another aspect of YouTube which I mimicked.
I came up with 'fake news' headlines to grab the audiences' attention which are used in the same way as advertisements/popups but with news down the side of the margin in the world of the loop.
We then put all the content into the created website on premier to use during the filming days.

During week one I was called on set for the scenes that I would be editing. On set I made notes on continuity and placement of shots so I knew how I wanted to edit the scene come post production week.
During the production weeks I worked on the individual websites and movements of them websites.
I created a website for Leila's first video (scene 4) and Remmi's website (scene 10). I came up with different types of 'news' down the side of the website for all the websites featured in the film, some being funny to the audience "sperm bank explodes, baby boom to hit the UK?" and more serious ones that link into the narrative of the film "homeless major rise 60% since 2010". This gives the audience an understanding that the content in this 'world' varies massively and what is deemed as 'important' to the characters in this world is very touch and go. The film plays on the importance and value of homeless people and how little people care about it if it doesn't effect them. It seems like people in this society only care when someone is making a video about them. This is a dystopian reflection on todays society so I wanted to capture that relevance in the website.

When it came to putting the photoshop made websites into the project I had to make sure it looked as authentic as it could do. This involved a lot of graphics and precision key framing. Every single frame per second needed to be key framed when it came to lining up the videos with the websites.
I had to key frame every single layer on to the website. During the production weeks I practised mocks of these movements so I could easily add in the videos from the creators and the cursor bar ect.
Another thing I did during the procession week was look over the footage and make sure I could edit it to make the narrative flow.
I discussed with the director what could make the scene flow better. In scene 23 it was originally shot with Leila scrolling through messages from her mother which didn't seem to fit the narrative. I suggested maybe she could scroll through comments from her video instead to the writer and the director and they agreed that this would be more effective and make the audience understand it more.
From this I created some comments for them to film ( pictured below).
This added more depth to the character too as it shows that she only cares about how she is perceived on line and not to her friend who she is 'mocking' for views and popularity on the loop.
I also noticed that between my scenes 22 and 23 there isn't a distinct reason as to why Cal figures out Leila is pretending to be homeless for the internet. After going through ideas of how he could've figured that out in the set time frame i suggested he goes to the shop and see's her channel being advertised. This was to be filmed during Post production weeks.

POST PRODUCTION- CLICKBAIT

During the weeks of post production I started off by putting the scenes together to create a seamless narrative.
With this I colour graded and fit the sound to the visuals. We needed to ensure we had a dead line for the syncing of sound for any ADR sessions to be done.
There was one scene of mine (scene 14) that could've benefited from being ADR'd but something went wrong in that ADR session with cast not being able to make it and technical problems ect where it just couldn't be done. I then tried to keep the clips with just dialogue in and overlay the reactions over the dialogue to stop the wind from over taking the scene. To make sure the wind was heard as little as possible I faded the sound in from the scene to make it less distracting and prominent then added a constant wild track under it to balance out the levels. I like to pride myself on attention to detail in terms of continuity editing as I always make sure every single last movement and presence in the following clip is the exact same in the following shot to make sure it flows seamlessly. This scene was difficult to achieve this as there were problems with the continuity at no fault of the cast or crew. The wind picked up heavily in certain parts of different shots so when I placed the clips together the position of hair and clothing was off. To overcome this I had to look through very carefully all of the takes of each shot and pick different parts of each one to match the movements to the previous shot as close as I could do. This took a lot of time and work to make sure it was precise but I knew that I did the best I could do with the clips that I been given.
I was responsible for editing the first 4 scenes together including the title sequence and the first scene following that. To make these as effective and grabbing as I could do I made sure the colour was vibrant and eye capturing to keep the audience intrigued and interested. In the second and third scene there were voice overs that needed to sound like it was coming fro the inside of a house. At first it was bit to muffled and loud but by the final edit I got them sounding much clearer and effective. To create the title sequence I added different text layers and timed them to come on screen asif some one was typing them. This fit to the theme of the film as it was based on the importance of social media and the internet.
I created a Loop logo to go over the vlogs that is first scene in the forth scene, following the credit. I transitioned the first few scenes together through a series of sound bridges and cross dissolves.
The first webpage I created was the Leila one that is scene directly after the first scene after the title sequence. To make this look as close to a real website as possible I keyframed every fps to make the movement of it seamless over the video. I then expanded Leila's video then closed it down to the same size as the thumbnail i then made the mouse click on to the following video.
I did this to all the webpages that I edited including Remmis.
With Remmi's webpage there was a slight issue after it was exported. From moving it to one computer to another the scale changed and I couldn't se the rest of this on the other computer until it was too late and exported as the scene would not render in premier. So unfortunately there wasn't enough time to fix this problem, however I am going to re- key frame them before handing them to any film festivals.
In two of my scenes I raised some issues with the narrative with the director. There was no reaction shot of Leila in scene 22 when the homeless woman is talking to her so it looks like laura's eye line is slightly off and looks like she is directing the lines to Cal. This changes the narrative massively. After raising this issue with the director she decided to reshoot some of this scene to add in those reaction shots which completely changed the scene and added much more emotion and story to it.
The scene following this needed a slight adjustment as Cals whereabouts wasn't made clear in the script which would've made the audience confused as to where he went. I suggested he should see Leila advertised as a celebrity on the loop which would trigger his reaction in the following scene. This, again, added more depth and emotion and made it easier for the audience to follow. With this scene Cal is in the shop when he gets distracted by an advertisement for the loop which states Leila is missing. I used a sound bridge to link Leila and Cals scenes together.
I also put together the credit scenes and the final loop video from Leila. Myself an Rachael worked closely together on creating the transitions between our scenes.
I also added in all the sound effects under my scenes to add more authenticity, this included ambient sounds, sirens, gun shots, typing, royalty free music and composed music.

For Remote I was an actor.
From the very first day I worked closely with the director and writer to develop my character. We did this through a series of character bios, working closely with the other actors and doing several different improv scenarios.
I played the character 'Lilly'. Lilly was described to me as being very caring and loving towards her friend Emma, and in a secure and committed relationship with the character Alan.
Lilly and Alans relationship was used to contrast with Emma and Jamies.
After reading the script several times to get a feel for my lines and Lilly personality I created a character bio, we did this by creating a monologue to read to the writer, director and the co actors.
Mine went as follows:
Hi, I'm Lilly. I am 21.
I moved in with Alan last year. Before that I lived with my two younger sisters and my mum, my dad is in the army so I don't see him a lot. I helped my mum out around the house and with my younger sisters a lot so I felt really bad when I decided to move in Alan. She didn't really support us moving in together at such a young age a lot of people didn't. They kept telling us we moved in way too soon but it just works for us, we're better when we're together. I met Alan 2 years ago when Emma invited me to jambs work's do. We clicked straight way. Emma's the only person who really supported my decision to move out young. I met her through an art exhibition, she told me that she loved my work! We went out for a drink after it and the rest is history. Alan means the world to me, he helps me a lot when I feel down. I've been in and out of jobs. My passion lies with art but the art gig isn't heavily paid so I'm currently at a call centre until my art career takes off.

Through improv we got to explore our characters further. I found though an improv session between Lilly and Jamie where Lilly had to confront Jamie on how little he is doing to support Emma during her pregnancy, Lilly was very understanding. I approached the situation in a calm manner and tried to get answers for my best friend. All I wanted from that moment was to address the situation and help the couple grow to develop a healthy family. When Jamie told me that I was overstepping my role in their relationship I let him know that I was only saying this for Emma's sake. This seemed to calm him down.
Through sessions like these I was able to embody my character and perform the scenes much more naturally.

PRODUCTION WEEKS 1&2- REMOTE

My first performance was on the Tuesday of the first week. This was my scene with Alan, Lilly's loving boyfriend. In this scene Lily has just found out that Jamie has been suspended from his job whilst she was in a cafe with her best friend Emma who is Jamie expecting wife.
I played Lilly to be concerned and distracted by this over her dinner with Alan. When Alan angles at the 'drama' at work I reacted to this news knowingly to Alan who is confused as to why and how I already know this. From there onwards I played the scene 'downwards' whilst playing with my food as Lilly was genuinely hurt and concerned for Emma so came across distracted from the conversation with Alan. The first break from this kind of acting was when Lilly tries to reach out to Alan to talk to Jamie to try and sort him out. From this Alan responds with a very sad reply where Lilly realises they're not close anymore and Jamie has withdrawn himself from their friendship.I reacted to this by looking down and leaving a silence before reaching for reassurance from Alan that he won't end up to be like Jamie. I wanted to make sure that the audience could grasp our developed and loving relationship so to do this I made sure I was fully involved in and developed the character bio that I made in pre production.
The second scene I filmed with the whole cast was the very first scene the audience is given. This is a scene from the 'fake world' the world that is revealed to be the virtual reality world in Jamie's game that he is addicted to and looses everything over.
In this scene myself and the cast practised different movements and ways to project speech in a unnatural way. I personally took inspiration from the drama 'Humans' (2015) where the robots use stiffer movements. I made sure my posture was 'proper' and my speech was clear and my words didn't overlap. I enjoyed playing out this scene as I got to play with the idea of what reality and being human is. This was the only time I was seen in this world.
The final scene I was in was filmed in the second week of filming in the cafe. This is where the audience see Lilly and Emma interact. They start by talking about how supportive Jamie is. I played this scene to try and prod information out of Emma. She is my best friend and I knew she was withholding information from me about Jamie and how she is feeling and coping with her pregnancy. I tried to make sure the audience were aware of my concern towards Emma and how much I just want to support her. By the end of this scene Emma receives a call from Jamie's boss informing her that Jamie has been suspended from his job. Through this phone call I wanted to appear worried and concerned and the following dialogue shows them emotions. Lilly was genuinely surprised that he lost his job for the time being and couldn't believe Emma has had to go through this. Understandingly I leave Emma at the cafe and tell her that she should go and confront Jamie about this phone call.
I wanted to appear loving and caring in all my onscreen relationships in this film and feel I was directed in a way that I was able to take a lot of the aspects from my character bio and apply them to my performances.
If I had the opportunity to perform these scenes again I would play the scene with Alan bit slower and have more anger in the tone of my voice with my scene with Emma when she finds out about Jamie being suspended.

Robyn Whipp

r.whipp@edu.salford.ac.uk

@00464682

Video Project 2019

ClickBait- Editor

Remote- Actor

ClickBait

Clickbait is a coming of age short film that reflects on todays morals and values with in society. It follows a young woman names Leila and her online personality. She is in the world of ‘The Loop’ which resembles popular social media platforms in our world such as Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. The story begins by establishing a close relationship with her friend, Cal. After four years pass we find that they are no longer in contact and Leila has got involved with being a personality on The Loop. We later find out that she has been asked to be apart of a social experiment with some the most popular stars on The Loop which involved exploiting homelessness, Leila does not think twice about this offer and jumps at the opportunity. During this video Cal spots Leila and tries to help her. The audience finds out that Cal has became homeless due to his love of makeup and sexuality which his father did not approve off. Leila keeps up the act of being homeless regardless of finding this out. When Cal goes to get supplies for them both he finds out through an advertisement that Leila is not actually homeless. When he goes to confront Leila about it she steals his art from him and sells it on as her merchandise.

As an editor for this project I had the shared responsibility with my co-editor to create The Loop world entirely from scratch. This heavily involved photoshop, a programme I have some previous skill in from college photography. Over pre production week I got back to grips with photoshop and myself and Rachael worked on creating a colour palette for the website. After several different tries we found that neon blue and pink worked the best. We were kind of thrown in the deep end with creating this website as we were not given a design for it so came it with it on our own backs, the positive that came out of this is that we had creative freedom and got to experiment with different designs.

I was responsible for creating the content in The Loop. I did heavy research on Youtube and Twitter where I got a feel for how much people want to be liked and known on these platforms. Firstly I started by creating the logo for the loop (pictured in pre-production week logs). I used the shape tools to create a pink circle with an outer glow between two blue glow lines on a black background with ‘The Loop’ inside the circle. I found that this was simple yet effective. I was also responsible for creating the intro videos for each of the loop videos that were to be shown. To do these I used a mixture of Premier Pro, Photoshop and AfterEffects to achieve the end results that I desired. I took inspiration form several different famous Youtubers intros during the creation of these introduction videos these included, Jake Paul, Jenna Marbles and David Dobrik. I also watched a video from a page called Filmora Video Editor that gave me tips on how the intro to YouTube videos should look and how they become apart of the creators brand (2016). I made JJ’s intro fun and quirky by cutting out an image of his face and key framing it so his face spins next to his name then overlaid on his video. I made sure Leila's was more about her image and made it more serious by taking a picture of her, putting it into photoshop then using the smudge tool to blur the surrounding to make it look more like an artistic background by pulling the pastel colours to the front. I created Billies from seventeen different shades of green and create a still image from it, I then put it into Adobe After Effects and played with he movement of it which created a cool wiggle movement. I made sure I kept the idea that the intros had to be apart of the creators brand whilst creating them. I feel each of the intros fitted each of the characters which was my intention. With out this website that we created I personally feel that the story would make little to no sense so it was a good job that we decided to make the website of our own backs and dedicated every day designing it and adding content into it.

One of my favourite aspects in editing is when scenes all come together seamlessly. I have this weird analogy that editing is kind of like a maths puzzle, you have to add the scenes up correctly and make sure they make sense together you get the answer which is different for each series of scenes all resulting in one final answer, the narrative. If the narrative makes sense then the edit is a success. I edited the first sequence of scenes which lead into the title. I added a wild track from online of birds chirping, relaxing ambient outdoor sounds as this scene is peaceful and innocent showing the friendship between Leila and Cal. The second scene is where Leila goes home, the ambient sounds get darker to match the time of day but are still pretty relaxing. I added an effect over the dialogue between Leila and her mother once they got into the house which made them sound a bit distorted giving it a more authentic feel that the conversation is happening behind closed doors. The third scene is when Cal goes home, I added very subtle dark suspense music under the ambience of this scene showing a contrast between Leila and Cals home life. I used the same distortion over Cals dads dialogue and added running footsteps to show Cals fear and upset of his fathers views. I then added the title over this scene. It starts with the cursor then forms the title letter by letter giving off a typing effect fitting in with the genre and theme of the film.

One of the major parts of this editing process were the websites. I got the initial editing and colour grading of the scenes done fairly quickly but the websites seemed to take so much time and persistence. I created the majority of the websites and content in the websites in preproduction it was just a case of final touches in post production week. I created all the news titles in the websites which I tried to add an element of comedy in for example one of the headlines was “Sperm bank explodes, baby boom to hit UK?” which contrasts with other head lines such as “Homeless major rise 60% since 2010” this added depth to the narrative as it is playing with the idea of what people see as important, the homelessness title also gives an insight of what the film is about. When it came to adding the websites in I had to keyframe every single fps of the video’s that were playing over the webpage to ensure it flows nicely and looks like a real website. For Leila's video I made the video shrink to the size of the thumbnail and added in a play and pause button which I key framed an arrow symbol to click to change the video. I did the same for Remmi’s video and webpage. I originally edited Remmis webpage on a separate computer to the second editors but when I put it into her computer she scaled it to be the same size as her webpages which interfered with the precision of the keyframe movements. This was not her fault as she did not intend this to happen. However this did make it difficult for me to to fix as we were running out of time and every time I tried to play it back on Premier the footage would not render properly causing the whole scene to freeze and glitch so here was no real way of me finding out if it was keyframed smoothly. After we exported it we found that it jerked slightly whilst the webpage was moving. Unfortunately there was not enough time to fix this before the deadline as it took too long to export. I will fix this before putting it into a film festival.

In the first week of preproduction I had picture lock on my scenes within the first few days. This was necessary for the director as she could see which scenes needed to be ADR’d. The only scene of mine that could've benefited from ADR was scene 14 where the influencers are outside recording the social experiment for The Loop. There were some technical difficulties in the first adr session which meant scene 14 could not be completed. This meant that I had to take matters into my own hands and edit the sound to be as clear and diminish the wind as much as I possibly could without loosing the dialogue. At first one of the sound technicians on this film, Brett, tried to help which to me sounded a little bit too unnatural in contrast to previous scenes, it also didn't sync with the visuals very well. In the end I added a wild track and faded in the sound as much as I could where the wind was the most prominent. It still sounded fairly windy but I felt that I did the best I could do in this situation.

Scene 14 was probably the most difficult scene to edit as there were problems with continuity. This was no fault of the cast or crew but because the wind picked up at different times which meant the position of hair and costume in the following shots were too different to fit together. I tried several different ways to get around this issue, including using takes that weren't logged as the best take and using different parts of the shot for reactions that were not the original reaction to the dialogue. “When a character responds to the actions or words or intentions of another character, the reader notices. She focuses on that response and on what causes it and thinks something’s going on here.” (Hill, B. 2011). Reactions are everything in editing and can add so much more depth and subtext to the narrative. To find reactions to fit in scene 14 whilst keeping the continuity was a challenge but I believe I succeeded in doing so as even though the reaction shots I used weren't meant for that part of the scene they fit really well and if anything brought out the personalities and attitudes of the Loop stars even more.

Another scene that had issues with continuity and legitimacy was scene 22. In this original scene there was no reaction shot of Leila when the homeless woman recognises her from The Loop. This made the eye line of the homeless woman look slightly unnatural and looked like she was directing the lines to Cal. After showing this to the director she agreed with my vision and filmed some reaction shots of Leila getting exposed for potentially not being homeless. I feel like this changed the scene completely and made the narrative flow better. Another problem was between scene 22 and 23 Cals whereabouts is not established in the script. This made Cals reaction in scene 24 seem a bit odd and sudden as there is no indication to the audience how he found out that Leila is part of the Loop and exposing homelessness for popularity. After showing this to the director she shot a filler scene where Cal enters a shop and encounters an advertisement for The Loop in which Leila is in. This causes his reaction after scene 24 which makes the whole story way easier for the audience to follow.

Over all I loved being an editor for this film. I consider editing one of my creative strengths and love everything about it. I would love to continue editing in the future as it is my passion and what I get the most enjoyment out of. I found the challenges editing Clickbait a positive experience as it was the first time I’ve worked so closely with a director whilst editing and got to pitch my ideas to her to create a whole new scene which ultimately pulled the whole film together. I wish I was given more creative freedom with the placement of music and sound as I feel it fell flat in some scenes for example the website scenes were silent which could loose the audience’s attention.

Remote

Remote follows the story of a young woman, Emma, who falls pregnant with her husband Jamie. Jamie is addicted to his video game, a virtual version of his own life in which he has complete control over. In this world he makes everything perfect, exactly how he wants his real world life to be. In the real world Jamie is far from his virtual character, he is constantly on his game as that is the only place he finds happiness. Emma is struggling with her pregnancy on her own and is about to open up to her best friend Lilly before she receives a call from Jamie's boss informing her that he has been suspended from work and has unpaid bills. With this Emma confronts Jamie which results in her deleting his gaming history and breaking up with him.

I played the character Lilly.

During pre production we came up with character bios for our roles. I created Lilly to be sweet and caring, someone who will always be there for her loved ones. We got an understanding of our characters backgrounds and relationships within the film through a series of different exercises. The one that worked the best for me was improvising.

“Improv can deepen your understanding of the material” (Mink, C, 2017)

Coming from a background of studying law and psychology and going into a whole new world of performance when starting university was very daunting. I tend to struggle with the anxiety of believing I am not good enough to act because everyone else has came from such experienced backgrounds but once I’m in the scene that anxiety goes away. One thing that I have struggled with across the few years is letting go of my insecurities whilst on camera and relaxation but I found that through improv my insecurities get smaller and smaller the further I step out of my comfort zone. Through the improv session for Remote I embodied the character much more throughly, I felt the way Lilly felt in them scenarios. This made my on screen relationships much more authentic and real for the audience, I got a lot of praise from the director about my reactions and emotions that I brought to the character and the scenes.

In the character bio I made Lilly come from a loving family, her father is in the army so she was very present in her home life until she moved out with her boyfriend, Alan who she has been living with for two years now. Alan and herself are in a close and loving relationship, they are very open with each other and will support each other through everything. Lilly’s relationship with Emma reflects this. She loves Emma and wants the best for her but can see that Jamie isn't good for her. Lilly knows there is something wrong with Emma and Jamie relationship but Emma won't directly open up to her about it. My goal with Lilly was to present her as a likeable and well loved character who will always be their for her friends no matter what. I feel like I portrayed this image fairly well as the audience were able to establish my relationship with Emma through our scene together.

Lilly and Emma’s relationship was special to me. I have close relationships with my friends outside of acting so loved the dynamic between my onscreen characters friendship.

In the first scene that Lilly appears it is in Jamie’s virtual world where everything is perfect and everyone is there to celebrate his promotion at work. The director wanted the acting to be slightly off putting for the audience to indicate that something isn't quite right but at the same time keeping it super subtle so the audience don't sense this isn't the real world too quickly. I took inspiration from the TV series ‘Humans’ (2015-2018) .The robots in this world are very human like whilst also being slightly robotic and stiff with their movements. I made sure my speech was clear and my movements were slightly unnatural. My posture was much more proper than how Lilly is presented in the real world. One of my most effective ways to subtly show the unnaturalness in this world was when Emma was speaking to me I turned away from her whilst she was mid sentence and looked towards Jamie, This shows that not only is Jamie controlling the dialogue in this world but he is ensuring the attention is always on himself. Obviously in the real world Lilly would never just turn away from Emma during a conversation this interaction suggests that Jamie is ignorant to their friendship as in the scene in the real world between Lilly and Emma is much more emotional and real.

In my scene with Emma I wanted Lilly to come across mature and supportive towards Emma’s home life situation. I wanted the audience to know that Lilly is concerned for Emma and understands that her pregnancy has been very one sided between herself and Jamie. I feel that I fulfilled by goals for Lilly in this scene as her super objective was to get Emma to open up to her without pushing her too much or making her feel attacked. I wanted Lilly to remain supportive and understanding after Emma received the phone call from Jamie's boss informing her that he has unpaid bills and has been suspended from his job for the time being. After the phone call I wanted Lilly to sound subtly upset and angry towards Jamie whilst trying to keep calm for Emma as she is getting progressively more stressed. I believe I met my objectives for Lilly in this scene from my reactions to the phone call, Lilly appears upset but not too emotional to the point which would make matters worse for Emma. I wanted Emma to understand that Lilly is on her side and will support her though this time and that things will be ok.

I took inspiration from the TV show ‘Friends” (1994-2004) to portray my onscreen relationship with Alan .I took particular interest in Monica and Chandlers relationship, they are how I imagined Lilly and Alan to be together. One aspect of Monica and Chandlers relationship which inspired how I would play my feelings towards Alan was their undying friendship and ability to talk to each other about their other friends’ problems. This is exactly one of the topics of conversation I have with Alan over dinner. During this scene Lilly had just come back from the cafe with Emma, she is worried about Emma which is shown through the conversation she has with her boyfriend Alan. Alan starts the conversation off in a light hearted way until he mentions that there was ‘drama’ at work today. This was the change in my script breakdown which causes a reaction from Lilly. Lilly instantly knows that he is talking about Jamie getting suspended, this leads to a conversation about how Lilly feels about the situation. I wanted the audience to know that Lilly felt pain for Emma and just wanted the best for her. I feel like I portrayed this well through my reactions and responses to Alan. Lilly tries to find solutions for things to be easier for Emma’s home life and suggest that Alan could knock some sense into Jamie but his response causes another change for my character. Alan responds that he isn't that close to Jamie anymore, which Lilly would know hurts him because during preproduction workshops Alan considered Jamie to be his best friend. I shown my upset and hurt for Alan in this moment though silence. When Lilly was ready to talk again she wants reassurance that Alan would never treat her the way Jamie is treating everyone in his life. I feel that I delivered a good performance in this scene as the audience were aware of our relationship and the emotional journey we go through during this scene. I thought my reactions to the difficult situation were good as they added depth and subtext to the conversation.

If I had the opportunity to do this again, I would take more time to work on the
pace of my speech and articulation. I did try and improve this in preproduction in my own time by watching videos on YouTube. One video that particularly helped me was from the creator, The Actors Academy (2018). This video taught me how to control my speech and not let my thoughts get in the way of the scene. I feel with time and practise I will become much more confident with my speech, I’ve seen a significant growth and improvement with my speech from first year so I will continue to work on my speech and confidence so I can fulfil my potential and ambitions with performance in the future.

REMOTE - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUcHAYoU6hI&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR3oQdhXPFHnJMOx-aaWJnKfAfgjBkGfXuSNNPhVg_8ca0zFyZ7YPPqceBE

CLICKBAIT- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiOTbVw6lLY&feature=youtu.be&fbclid=IwAR1VtO892RKx5OouyWxTUXN6zzYeKz6Vc7-ezHqldeKIjG6tT9rmdZ_FE14

References:

Dobrik, D (2015, 15 February). Cool Intro | David Dobrik [Video file].
