The main theme of ''A Scandal in Bohemia'' is how Irene Adler defies Victorian ideas about women as obedient, helpless victims who are dependent on men for happiness. In several ways, Adler proves herself a resourceful and empowered individual who makes her own way in the world - all while outwitting a king and the best detective in England.

The story revolves around the case of Miss Mary Sutherland, a woman with a substantial income from the interest on a fund set up for her. She is engaged to a quiet Londoner who has recently disappeared. Sherlock Holmes's detective powers are barely challenged as this turns out to be quite an elementary case for him, much as it puzzles Watson. The fiancé, Mr. Hosmer Angel, is a peculiar character, rather quiet, and rather secretive about his life. The climax of the sad liaison comes when Mr. Angel abandons Miss Sutherland at the altar on their wedding day. Holmes, noting all these things, Hosmer Angel's description, and the fact that he only seems to meet with Miss Sutherland while her disapproving youngish stepfather, James Windibank, is out of the country on business, reaches a conclusion quite quickly. A typewritten letter confirms his belief beyond doubt. Only one person could have gained by this: Mr. James Windibank. Holmes deduces "Angel" had "disappeared" by simply going out the other side of a four-wheeler cab. After solving the mystery, Holmes chooses not to tell his client the solution. Holmes had earlier advised his client to forget "Mr. Angel", but Miss Sutherland refused to take Holmes' advice and vowed to remain faithful to "Angel" until he reappears for at least ten years. Holmes predicts Windibank will continue a career in crime and end up on the gallows.

Set in 1890, a London pawnbroker named Jabez Wilson comes to Holmes and Watson. He tells them that his young assistant Vincent Spaulding, some weeks ago had shown him and urged him to respond to a newspaper want-ad offering work to only red-headed male applicants. The next morning, Wilson had waited in a long line of fellow red-headed men, was interviewed and was the only applicant hired. He was well-paid for several weeks of doing obviously useless clerical busywork in a lonely office, but finally one morning a sign on the locked office door inexplicably announced: "THE RED-HEADED LEAGUE IS DISSOLVED." Wilson then went to the landlord, who said that he'd never heard of Duncan Ross, the person who formed the league. After Holmes' client Wilson leaves (having given the detective a description of Spaulding), Holmes decides to go and see Spaulding, whom Holmes notices has dirty trouser knees. Holmes then taps on the pavement in front of the pawnbroker's shop. With the case solved, he calls Inspector Jones and Mr. Merryweather. The four confront the thieves, John Clay and his helper Archie (they were Spaulding and Ross in disguise), who had contrived the Red-Headed League rigamarole just to keep Wilson out of his shop while they did digging in the basement in order to break into the bank vault next door. Back at Baker Street, Holmes explains to Watson how he solved the case.

The Presence of the Bizarre in Everyday Life: The story of Wilson’s misadventure further underscores this point by showing how an average man with a dull occupation can be suddenly and unexpectedly thrust into a strange and seemingly inexplicable situation. The story contains details and images that would almost be better suited to science fiction or a dream.

The Power of Reason: Holmes uses pure logic to cut right to the heart of any matter. After Holmes explains how he reached his conclusions, Wilson remarks that Holmes’s method is actually very simple, a point emphasized throughout the story. Although everyone has the ability to rationalize, few people take the opportunity to do so, even the intelligent Dr. Watson. Though Watson should be able to solve the case as easily as Holmes.

Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock Homles' Brother): In this story, Mycroft is introduced for the first time in the Sherlock Holmes series. He is described as being sharper than Holmes, but lacks the motivation and energy to pursue the mysteries he encounters. Mycroft is the first to hear of the Greek interpreter's troubles, and tells Holmes about the case so that he can solve the mystery.

Mr. Melas (The Greek Interpreter): Mr. Melas is a short, stout interpreter who knows many languages. One night he is forced into a business deal between Mr. Latimer, Mr. Kemp and the kidnapped Paul Kratides. Due to his involvement, Melas was almost killed in the process. He originally goes to Mycroft for help because they both frequented the same social club.

Mr. Harold Latimer (Villain): Latimer forcefully encourages Melas from his home and brings him to a secret location to translate for a business deal. Politely threatening Melas in the process, he is simply looking to make money off of the kidnapped Paul Kratides. Latimer and his business associate, Kemp, torture Paul with the hope that he will sign over his sister's inheritance. He is later killed at the end of the story by Paul's sister Sophy.

Wilson Kemp (Villain) Kemp is described as a 'small, mean-looking, middle-aged man' who wears glasses. While his words are filled with harsh threats, his tone and demeanor seem pleasant, always adding a nervous laugh between his words. This man is working with Latimer to get the Kratides' money, helping Latimer hold Paul hostage. He is also killed at the end of the tale by Sophy Kratides.
