Women's Advocate (2018)

In January of 2018 I went to the Women’s March with my friend, her mom & sister, and our other friend. Some of our friends weren’t allowed to go, which confused me. It was amazing being surrounded by so many people who just wanted equality for the genders and respect for women. I saw so many people who advocated for bodily autonomy and freedom of choice. I realized I have a passion to being involved in what I believe in. It moved my perspective from just being a spectator of women’s issues to being an active participant.

Child of Divorce (2019)

My parents divorced when I was 16, and my senior year I was a part of an all-day “training” with other upperclassmen and there was an activity called “get off the bus” where we had to go to either side of the room depending on what we identified with. When it came to whose parents were divorced and whose were together, a lot less people were on my side than I expected. Most of my close friends had divorced parents, and so I didn’t realize how uncommon it actually was where I lived. It made me realize that my experience wasn’t universal, and that I had a skewed perspective of how many families were fractured.

When I was in middle school, I realized that some of my friends had a lot more money than I did. I was talking to a few of my friends about weekend plans and they wanted to go to kings island. Two of us didn’t have season passes so we couldn’t go, and one friend simply said “just have your parents buy one”. The two of us looked at each other and realized we had different views on asking our parents for a $150 season pass out of nowhere. It made me really reflect on and realize that some families just had more disposable income than mine did.

Gender Identity (2023)

I never really considered my gender until about a year ago when I was in a hotel room with my friends and we were talking about our gender identities. All of my friends in the room were either trans or non-binary, so they were having a really deep conversation about their experiences not conforming to the roles society has placed on gender. I, however, was the only person in the room who identified as my gender assigned at birth, and it made me think about how I actually deeply identify as a woman and love that aspect of my identity. I was faced with people who had so much to say on their gender expression and identity, and I just listened to perspectives that solidified the way I felt about myself.

Christianity (2024)

I was standing outside with a group of friends, when someone asked: “who’s on your necklace?” I replied "Jesus." with a smile, and was met with awkward glances and silence. I recently began the journey of converting to Catholicism, and I never really expected people to view me differently because of this. There is a lot of stigma around Christianity as a religion full of insane people and bigotry, but that just isn’t the case. It has become incredibly commonplace to make fun of Christianity, and I don’t think it is recognized as such. I was caught off guard by how unreceptive some of my friends were regarding my religion, but it made me recognize how much scrutiny any religion can be met with.
