Common Sense Education

On this website, you will find a variety of tools and apps that you can use to gamify the learning environment in your classroom. You can start by choosing the age category of your students and the website will give you brief information about many apps and tools that you can use. The website elaborates on the pros and cons of each tool and shares some feedback from educators who used it before. What I like about Common Sense Education is that it tells you about the privacy settings/ratings of each tool and whether it is safe to use in the classroom and what kind of data the app collects from its users and whether the app tracks the users or not.

Gimkit

Gimkit is a classroom gamifying resource used to engage students with a variety of questions surrounding chosen subject matter. It has a wide selection of game mode including new modes that mirror popular games that students play outside of school. Currently, the platform has a mode that emulates both "Among Us" as well as "Fortnite" which are all favourites in my classroom.

Gimkit is also unique in that you are able to collaborate with students in order to make the questions. By sharing a link students are able to submit questions to the teacher for review, and once approved these questions are used in the game.

In all game modes students answer questions to gain a different form of credit that is then used in game. Sometimes the credit goes toward upgrades, investigating people, and earning snowballs to freeze your enemies.

Questions appear on students personal device screens in random order and if they answer incorrectly the correct answer is shared. The question then goes back into rotation so that they have the chance to answer it correctly the next time. Many students have commented that they find the repetition helpful.

After the game Gimkit has the option of providing statistics around which questions were answered incorrect most often, who struggled/who didn't etc.

Overall, Gimkit is a wonderful resource that has had a major impact in my classroom. While grade 9 students often struggle to initiate study habits and activities, this is an easy way for them to review their knowledge and find out where gaps are during class time.

Classcraft

Classcraft offers a gamification option for the classroom where students are able to "cash in" for tangible rewards and utilize real world success in order to develop an online hero.

As a teacher you are able to set up a Classcraft classroom with your students where they have the option of choosing a "race and class" similar to the game of Dungeons and Dragons. The teacher then sets up a variety of classroom tasks and rewards that students are able to work towards by completing real world classroom activities and tracking them online. They are then able to cash in their gems for the set prizes.

Additionally, teachers are able to add consequences for unexpected student behavior where they have to complete a number of restorative tasks or lose a number of gems/rewards.

Ultimately, the premise is excellent, and it is very engaging for students. However, the execution is subpar, and the site the challenging to use on the administrative end. The instructions when setting up a classroom are somewhat unclear, and the web page has run into a number of issues that require the teacher to have a dedicated app on another device. If the site were to be made more user-friendly it would be a home run!
