As I read "Howl" by Allen Ginsburg, social, political, and economic issues easily surfaced. I thought it would be smart to juxtapose some of those issues with the happy American women in the kitchen. The surrounding controversies that occurred about homosexuality, marijuana, mental health, capitalism, communism, gender roles, patriotism, and families are all extremely relevant to how society was functioning at the time. The readings complement each other well, considering that "America" personifies America and its issues. This makes a tough conversation come off in more of a casual tone and the perspective changes make for different interpretations.
