Slides look very good. I would perhaps say that being within a certain institutional context (teacher in a classroom, lawyer or judge in a courtroom etc) enables an individual to speak from 'within the true', but otherwise you explain Foucault well and suggest a good reading of the film

Huw

You chose to structure this presentation around a series of interventions by all members of the group that were not arranged in a neat chronological order, creating a real sense of dynamism for the project as a whole. It was a good idea to begin with a definition of the concept of discourse as it is deployed by Foucault, as this is fundamental to an understanding and use of his work. This was neatly appended by an account of the way in which he insists on the imbrication of power and knowledge in terms of what is at stake in ‘knowing’ and defining the world. The account of the will to truth could have been a little clearer, but it followed logically from the previous explanation of power/knowledge. You then deploy these concepts in a very clear and thorough analysis of the film. I agree that the film projects some essentially Western concepts of culture and sexuality onto an imaginary ‘Other’, but I wonder if there is any sense that in doing so it expels or attributes certain types of beliefs and behaviours to the Navi that Western society is uncomfortable with? To be fair the unit only really covers this issue in next week’s class on Edward Said, so perhaps this is understandable. The consideration of the function of disability in relation to a concept of the normal is very good. Jakes abnormality is central to the film as you observe, and in a sense it is what inaugurates the narrative which then offers various speculative ways of making up for this perceived abnormality or deficiency. Finally, it is interesting that you state that the films ‘message’, such as it is, is ‘discursive’ rather than ‘coercive’, and this is a very good way of reading film as an effective conduit for ideology. A really impressive piece of work overall.
