         <title>Formative Assessment</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Formative assessment allows the teacher to catch the misconceptions of the students early in the lesson. This will enable time for reteaching where necessary prior to summative assessment that heavily impacts grades. This low-stakes type of frequent assessment gives ample opportunities for the educator to provide constructive feedback to the students. At Midland High School, homework grades in the math department are not recorded, but rather used as tools for helping the teacher identify weaknesses within the students' content knowledge. The challenging nature of high school math courses makes this type of instructional strategies critical for ensuring students keep up with the expected content understanding. In addition to daily homework, quizzes would be an effective use of this strategy for checking students' understanding and providing proper feedback. <br><br>Alber, R.          <title>Nonlinguistic Representations</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Students will use nonlinguistic representations to model concepts and examples from the content. By incorporating this instructional strategy, a teacher is able to reach students that are visual learners. It also helps reinforce the verbal portions of the lessons, and provides concrete representations for students to grasp challenging ideas. This tool is essential to the high school math classroom, regardless of specific subject. Graphs and charts are useful for organizing information and understanding relationships between mathematical concepts. Visual representations of word problems help students identify with the specific task being asked of them, and they provide an opportunity for teachers to check for understanding before students spend extensive amounts of time solving a problem for the wrong question. <br><br><em>Marzono's high-yield instructional strategies</em>.          <title>Small Steps and Practice</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In this instructional strategy, educators teach only a small amount of material at a time and ensure that students master the content before moving on to the next topic. This prevents students from becoming confused or overwhelmed. Mathematics is a subject that not every student enjoys or feels comfortable in, and this strategy helps to alleviate some of that discomfort by introducing topics in smaller pieces. In terms of a mathematics classroom, this instructional strategy is of the utmost importance as each concept builds upon the previous ones. If students do not fully grasp an idea before the math teacher starts teaching another, the students will become lost, confused and frustrated. This will also hinder the student's ability to understand the current topic because he/she will still be focused on the previous lesson that he/she did not understand. Included in this instructional strategy is the time for students to practice concepts, a fundamental tool of mathematics that helps solidify concepts. Although this strategy could consume more time in the classroom per lesson, it is more likely that it saves time, as reteaching is not as likely to be necessary. <br><br>Rosenshine, B. (2012).          <title>Clear and Effective Learning Feedback</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In providing clear and effective feedback to students throughout lessons helps students evaluate their own successes and areas of needed improvement. Feedback helps learners grow and develop their skills in a productive way that allows for future success on assessments. For high school math students, it is appropriate to provide only grades for assignments with no feedback. Without specific, clear feedback mathematics students are unable to identify areas that need improvement. Because the mistakes in math problems vary greatly from one student to the next, it is important for individuals to identify what areas they need to work on. Feedback also allows the teacher to identify document specific issues that need to be addressed on individual and whole-class levels. In mathematics, specific feedback also helps keep students from getting discouraged because the teacher can point out that the student did not do the entire problem wrong, but focus on the small components that need to be adjusted. <br><br>TeachThought Staff.          <title>Questions, cues and advanced organizers</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When teachers ask questions and provide cues for students, the learners are able to identify what concepts are most important in the lesson. This could also help some students who learn best with auditory cues to remember the topic by reflecting on the question that was asked and what the appropriate answer was. The use of advanced organizers will help students compare, contrast, and organize information about specific mathematical concepts. These tools could prove especially useful in algebra classes for categorizing various types of equations with their graphs and other pertinent information, and in geometry classes for organizing properties of shapes and the equations that correspond to their areas/volumes. There are many avenues for the use of advanced graphic organizers in math courses, and they may help to simplify the information into one convenient location for students to use and learn through. <br><br><em>Marzono's high-yield instructional strategies</em>.
