For the uninitiated, terrarium refers to small sized ecosystems or gardens that are residing in a tank, a glass jar, or container. Most of them are used as decorations, but they are also excellent alternatives for amphibian or reptile habitats. Plenty of options are available in Singapore, from moss terrarium to self-sustainable ones. They are easy to care for, hence suitable for both adults and children.

The concept of terrariums is not new, they have been around since 1830s when an Englishman created a ‘miniature garden’ accidentally. Grass and fern grew from dirt that he had left in a glass jar, placed near a window of his office.

To score the perfect piece, do consider these pointers:

1. Container: choose shape and size optimal to its eventual placement. Popular choices includes hanging glass containers, jars, as well as asymmetrical glass boxes.

2. Layer: bottom most layer is made of pebble. Next is a fiberglass screen, followed by coir bricks or something comparable.

3. Plant: slow growing plants and dwarf versions of large sized plants like miniature ferns, are recommended. These plants need less light and attention to grow. Similarly, moss can also be added to mimic the ‘greens’ in a garden.

For more info:-Self-sustainable Garden Singapore
