These cells can differentiate into different types of cells. For Example:-They can differentiate into Skin Cells, Neurons and Ciliated Cells. There are three main sources of stem cells.
Stem cells are very important to modern medicine due to two important characteristics:-
1) Stem cells can divide again and again to form many cells.

There are commercial collection and storage facilities and can easily be collected and stored however a limited quantity of stem cells can be collected from a umbilical cord and the umbilical cord is discarded whether or not the stem cells are collected.

3) Adult Stem Cells- These stem cells are found in adults, these are found deep in tissue such as bone marrow. It is also being used to find a treatment for Alzheimer's
Leukemia is a type of cancer which causes an abundance of white blood cells(WBCs) to be produced. The patient undergoes chemotherapy where they take chemicals to kill the cancer cells however this also kills the cells that produce the blood cells so there is a procedure followed:-
1) A large needle is injected into a large bone, where the bone marrow is located and a fluid is extracted.

2) The stem cells are extracted from the liquid and are stored.

3) The patient is given a high dosage of chemotherapy drugs which kills the cancer cells however this leaves the body unable to produce the white blood cells.

Dementia is a mental disorder which is mainly found in elderly people. Dementia is causes forgetfulness, disorientation and communication problems.

There is no cure for Alzheimer's however there is research going on using stem cells. There is a approach that is being thought about which is to use stem cells to produce Neurotrophin. Neurotrophin is a protein which helps neurons survive and grow. However scientists take into consideration all the ethical decisions and there are many sources that people do not know about such as from umbilical cords of new born babies and the bone marrow of adults. Scientists suggest using IVF(In Vitro Fertilisation) to produce embryos just to extract stem cells.
