Teacher Media Project - Section 02 by Rudolf Kraus

The literature on teacher education has highlighted the importance of identity in teacher development (Yuan and Burns, 2017). This Media Project allows you to compare and contrast your understanding of “teacher,” as influenced by digital and media formats, with your own developing teacher identity.

a. I selected this movie clip because I believe it is a good example of a poor teacher stereotype. The teacher is very unenthusiastic, and boring his students to sleep with his lesson.

b. This clip matches the classic image of a boring history teacher, but it does not compare to my idea of a good teacher, as there is no effort being put into his lesson, there is no evidence of a community, and he simply does not care to help anyone engage in a discussion about the lesson.

c. My developing teacher identity is opposite of this teacher. If I were to give a lesson about The Great Depression, I would do my best to inform the students in a fun and informational way. I would be enthusiastic when asking questions, and maybe provide a reading that students could divide into groups and discuss on. Overall, my idea of my teacher identity does not compare to this fictional example.

a. I selected this video because I found it funny and was the first thing I thought of when doing this project. The students have so little respect for their teacher, and think they can get away with anything.

b. This clip challenges the stereotype that teachers are oblivious of their students breaking rules and how the students can "play" the teacher. This clip reinforces the idea that I already had, which is that teachers are not dumb.

c. This clip develops my teacher identity because it teaches me to not be oblivious to my students shenanigans. I need to be able to stand up to them and not let them walk all over me.

1. I selected this clip from the movie, Stand and Deliver because A, it is one of my favorite movies and B, this clip clearly captures the bravery and strong integrity of an excellent teacher. Essentially, this clip can be inspiring to current and future teachers.

2. This clip stands out amongst my preconceived ideas of teachers as Jaime Escalante fights for the rights of his students outside of the classroom. Mr. Escalante guides his classroom of minorities to high scores on their AP Calculus exam when, the scoring analysts decide that all passing scores for this group of students does not adhere to academic honesty. These examiners' opinions of credibility on the AP test clearly were influenced by racist ideologies therefore, Mr. Escalante challenges them by standing up for the equality of hard-working students despite ethnicity. In society today, there are not many teachers that would risk possibly losing their job to fight against inequality amongst their students.

3. This movie as a whole as well as the movie, Freedom Writers contributes to my developing teacher identity as inspiration. Both instructors in both movies are such amazing advocates for their students and not only work to teach them content but also to build relationships and help guide them to distinguish their own identities. I hope that one day I too will be able to make a difference in a student's life!

a. I chose this movie clip because it was one of my first impressions of teachers as a child. To this day it is the first thing that comes to mind when someone asks me about teacher in media. This isn't necessarily because it is how I view teachers, but that it was a prevalent part of my childhood. This clip shows the "stereotypical" relationship between a teacher and student. The student is afraid of the teacher and the teacher scolds the students for doing what they aren't suppose to be doing. The teacher is not shown and the voice is not so much words but more of annoying sounds. this is the students point of view which leads us to believe the teacher is boring and not worth mentioning.
b. This clip may hold true about some educators, but not many. This stereotype that teachers are boring and harsh toward their students does not hold true in todays society in most cases. We can see in many classrooms that school is where children feel safe. Teachers can create a strong and healthy bond with their students that would in turn help the teacher gain the respect and attention of the students, which we do not see in this clip. In many classrooms teachers are working to create a healthy environment for all of their students to learn and grow. I have seen this throughout my own education.
c. My developing teacher identity compares to this clip because it helps me to understand that to be a successful educator I need to connect with my students. I should play a bigger role than just a background noise and some lengthy assignments. By being present in the lives of my students and creating a safe environment, I feel that I can keep my students engaged and interested throughout our time together.

1.) I chose this scene from breaking bad because I found it to be a very realistic interpretation of a high school classrooms. The teacher is very passionate about what he is teaching until the student rudely interrupts and ruins the teachers mood towards teaching.

2.) I like that this clip gets across the fact that the teacher enjoys and is passionate about what he teaches because I feel that is very important. This clip also shows part of the reason teachers get worn out when students are rude or do not give any attention to all the work and passion that the teacher puts in to teaching.

3.) This clip compares to my building teacher identity because I want to be passionate about what I teach, and try to keep students intrigued and interested in what I am teaching. This clip also makes me think of ways to handle the situation with the rude student that will make me less likely to become burnt out as that is also very important to a teachers identity. I feel as soon as a teacher become burnt out it effects students in a very negative way.

1. I chose this scene from Wonder because I found it to be a very up to date representation of what a teacher should be. The teacher is extremely encouraging towards all his students and he is building their confidence at a young age by having them stand up and speak. The kids also seem to be very engaged in the conversation and look like enjoy being there.

2. I think this clip is very similar to teachers in todays society. The teacher seems to have a strong bond with each child. He looks like he truly loves teaching and is happy to be there. This holds true to most teachers who teach younger kids because you have to keep them intrigued and engaged. I also believe that most teachers today are not only building children's minds but also their confidence and self respect, which is shown in this clip.

3. This clip compares to my building teacher identity because this is definitely the kind of teacher I want to resemble. I want to create a healthy environment for every single child that walks through the door. The teacher in the clip encourages his students to step outside their comfort zone so they can grow and grow every day. I would love to be a teacher like this one from Wonder.

1: I chose this clip from Bad Teacher because it demonstrates not only a horrible way of commenting and grading students papers, but often what we feel the teacher is going to write when they grade an assignment we didn't put our best work into or fully understand.

2: This clip represented the complete opposite of teachers and their methods of grading/commenting papers. Teacher's will try to make the best out of a response that doesn't make sense or doesn't correlate at all with the question asked. They also comment in a nice way of asking to clarify or using terms that equal achievement such as "good job" or "terrific". I don't think I have ever heard a teacher call their student stupid and if they did there would probably be a complaint put in against them, leading them to some serious trouble.

3: This clip develops my teacher identity because it represents the teacher I don't want to be. I want to make the best of my student's work and help them when they are in need of it. I also want to build their self esteem when it comes to learning, not completely crush it. A teacher should never tell a student they are stupid and uncapable of learning and I hope to never be one of them.

A. Watching Magic School Bus was always a special treat in elementary school so I am not surprised that I am adopting Miss Frizzle's personality for my developing teacher identity. She was a likable teacher, not only by her fictitious students but by real students too. It is refreshing to see teachers painted in a better light than the usual old and mad-with-authority teachers found in other cartoons where school is portrayed as a prison.

B. I don't see teachers taking their class on trips to outer space via a very accommodating bus unless the United States shifts some funds around, you can see parallels with modern-day education. Miss Frizzle embodies the more modern approaches to teaching. She has built a community in her classroom where her students depend on their teacher and each other. Additionally, learning is more active and entertaining. The kids go on wild adventures and end up learning about various topics without noticing that they are learning.

C. Aside from the various themed dress shirts I started collecting that coordinate with holidays and lessons, I plan to adopt Miss Frizzle's approaches to teaching. By making education more active and social, I hope to keep my future students engaged and interested. Hopefully, they will not even know they are learning.

A.P. Bio - Eli Tamburino

A.) I selected this clip from A.P. Bio because I think it exemplifies the extreme of the "bad teacher", someone who lacks professionalism and ultimately is more concerned with their own motivations rather than the education of their student. Jack even goes on to mock the tropes of the hard-headed teacher who eventually learns from their students, and cements that he has no concern with teaching at all.

B.) When comparing this clip to the real world of teaching, this is an absurdist portrayal of a teacher who would probably never be hired for the job in the first place. The show also shows that the students have a higher standard for appropriate behavior in the classroom than the teacher in this case. In real life, the opposite is the case with the teacher enforcing a behavioral standard, which I think just makes the clip funnier.

C.) I chose this clip in part because the teacher is supposed to be a high school science teacher, which is what I want to teach after graduating. I would say the biggest difference between myself and Jack Griffin is that my sense of what good teacher is is someone who is able to adapt themselves and the content to the individuals in their class and trying to meet them at their needs, whereas Jack is completely self interested. I would also make an effort to drive safely on the way to class each morning. :)

I selected this TV clip because not only is New Girl my favorite show of all time, but I think it helps show how female teachers are typically portrayed and the kind of teacher I want to be versus the kind I don’t want to be.

This clip compares to what I already know about teaching because it displays how a teacher has to adapt to a changing environment constantly, whether they like it or not. In this case, Jess’ school is undergoing construction, as well as budget cuts, and she is forced to share classrooms with other teachers / subjects. Teachers are forced to adapt to whatever is happening in the school because their boss said so, like any other job. They could think that they have control over what happens in their classroom, but there could always be something that can change that. Schools are constantly changing, whether it’s getting worse or better, and teachers just have to ride with that wave because it’s their job to. I also want to touch on the comment made right at the beginning from her roommate about how when he thinks of female teachers, he thinks of his friend and porn. Females are obviously more sexualized in the media, which makes it harder for them in real like to be seen as professional. If a man only thinks of a female teacher as a sex figure, it discredits the knowledge they actually have and weakens their confidence. Women should be able to be teachers without it being sexualized. They should not have to dress overly professional to be seen with respect.

My developing teacher identity compares to this clip because although not a lot of her teaching tactics are shown (I’ve seen the whole show so I have more background information), I want to be just like Jess. In the clip she is discussing with her roommates whether she should stop teaching, however it is clear that she is passionate about it and really loves the kids. A teacher I don’t want to be like is the science teacher that comes into her room, who is very monotone and miserable, hating on other subjects in school and clearly disliking their job. I would never want to work in a school if I obviously did not enjoy it, because that is noticeable to students and alters their in school experience.

Glee - La Cucaracha - Samantha Sion

I only added the link to this video because it is a more relevant clip to the assignment and I also could not link the whole episode, but I want to reflect on this whole episode (Glee Season 3 Episode 12 “The Spanish Teacher”) so I will also be pulling some examples.
A) I selected this piece because it really shows how things change over the course of generations. For example, Mr. Schuester says he used to do this song every year on what he called Taco Tuesday and it always was a hit. However, looking at his students’ faces in this clip, he is realizing that maybe he is out of touch with the current generation. He is later called out by one of his Glee students, Santana, for portraying weird and ridiculous Hispanic stereotypes as well as him only becoming a Spanish teacher because it was “the only job available at the time”.
B) From what I know about teaching, it is a constant learning experience. Things change a lot in our society as generations go on and teachers have to try to keep up with them to be relatable or to relate to their students. For example, during this episode, he takes a Spanish course to try to become a better teacher, but his Spanish teacher ends up being a better fit for his current job and Mr. Schuester ends up taking a history teacher position at the school. He learns he is no longer fit to be a Spanish teacher by hearing that Santana reported his rendition of La Cucaracha to the principal and ruined his chance of tenure, and also the fact that she expressed to him that he was pushing stereotypes about Hispanic culture onto his students, making them believe that these stereotypes were true since they were coming from an authority figure.
C) Mr. Schuester has constantly believed he was the cool teacher, but this proves to him even further that his teacher identity was not what he thought. Since the generation he is teaching in has changed since when he was in high school, he is no longer seen as cool by the students and that some of his lessons are very old-school. But, in my opinion, teacher identity always changes as we as teachers evolve with time. He ends up becoming relatable to his students by being there for them instead of trying so hard to be this cool teacher and he learns from his students as well as stated above.

This video is a short clip from the movie "Coach Carter". Even though he is not a teacher, there are some things he does in this movie that we as teachers could use to allow our students to be comfortable in our classrooms. In this movie there is a stereotype that is a stereotype in todays world, that student of colors, especially colored men, cannot get into college unless it has something to do with sports. And that has been a long term stereotype since before the civil rights during segregation and all of that. Coach Carter being the person he is and the mentor he is, teaches his boys that there is more to life than just basketball. The students in order to be on the team had to have a gpa of a 2.6 or higher, the students had to dress to impress with suit and ties on game day, and they were to be respectful and all of that. The way he handled those boys were in a coach perspective, but a teacher could also use what Coach Carter did. Making rules in the classroom is one of them, something that is tolerated in the class, and what is not tolerated in the class. Understanding that your class may be diverse with the students, and that to treat one another as equal, giving everyone the opportunity to do better and to strive in all of there classes in not just yours. The support system in this movie, is the main thing that teachers could use from this movie. Students need their teachers and mentors to believe in them to do better, and they also need the support and help. I believe after watching this movie, as a soon to be teacher these are some of the things I would use in my classroom, to allow that comfort for my students to understand this is a safe place to learn and teach one another.

A.) I chose this clip because Jessica Day is a fictional character, however while watching New Girl I always admired Jess's love for teaching throughout the show. I think this clip shows how teachers struggle with the idea that they want to teach, but sometimes their school environment does not allow them to work to their fullest potential. I also think this is why some people turn the idea of being a teacher down because they believe that they will be set up to fail depending on the school and resources provided to them. Jessica Day always makes sure to be fair and lets her students know that the classroom is a safe place.

B.) I chose this clip because of how Jess is treated when she tells her co-workers "Do you have a freezer or should I flush these frogs?" The school is forcing teachers to share classrooms and her co worker even says "People are anti future" so he knows there is an issue but he does not care.

C.) This clip shows how teachers and resources are not made a priority, of course the school is not able to fund most things but Jessica Day seems to be the only one who cares. It goes to show that the more people are about an issue the more of a change you can make. Jess tries throughout the show to get her co workers to realize this, there was even one episode where Jess takes it upon herself to show her kids the beach and the ocean because a lot of them have never been. This compares to what we know about teachers that they are under appreciated. If more people cared and came together I think that the school could have lived up to its full potential. It also shows throughout the show how Jessica Day makes sure that her students feel comfortable in the classroom, although it is not shown in this clip, you can tell how passionate Jessica Day is about teaching and giving the kids the best experience they can have in school!

3a. I selected this scene because when I thought of a teacher, Mr. Crocker was the first one I thought of. I recall watching The Fairly Oddparents in my childhood, I loved it. This scene perfectly shows how Mr. Crocker was crazy. He loved handing out F's, especially to Timmy(one of his students).
3b. This video compares to what I thought/think. When I was a child, I used to think your grades were what the teachers wanted to give you, just how Mr. Crocker did in the show. After some time, I've realized that your grade is what you make it out to be. The English classes I have experienced say otherwise. I believe that my high school English teachers would give their students papers the grade they believed they deserved. Common sense didn't change my view because of how strict they were. It felt like their grades were what they wanted to give. The grades felt reasonable only when teachers included rubrics attached to your paper, showing why you got what you got, or comments on your paper.
3c. My developing teacher identity knows that Mr. Crocker is the teacher I am not going to become. I don't want my beliefs, or moods to get in the way of my grading. I also don't plan on abusing my position of power over my students. I think comments are very important to leave after the material I would grade, to explain why the student got the grade or any suggestions/advice they should know(depending on the grade level I choose to teach).
