I think a social factor that has definitely impacted me was always regarding arts and crafts around mothers day and fathers day. Obviously from one perspective, these assignments are really fun and engaging, however when a student lacks having both parents in their lives it can be really difficult.

A social factor that impacted me was based around field trips aamd excursions beyond school. I remember not wanting to attend my grade 8 graduation trip because it was very costly. The trip was to downtown Toronto, where we toured Kensington market and went on a boat cruise. On top of grad itself, having to find a dress etc, it was hard and I did not want my family to have to pay for this expensive outing. Some families may not be able to afford these events. This is important to remember.

Extracurricular Activities

In my lived experiences in education, extracurricular activities had a huge impact on me - particularly in high school. The social factor associated with this would primarily be teachers, as they encouraged and facilitated learning in non-structured ways that did not involve formal curriculum. Drama, filmmaking, and eco-club were some of the biggest influences on me throughout my own education, and have contributed to who I am today.

Throughout my high school experience I had the opportunity to join many different clubs and extracurricular activities. I think the one that impacted me the most was joining the rock climbing team. The team was run by one of my favourite teachers, who happened to be one of my main influences for my career (my tech teacher). This allowed me to spend time in an unstructured environment with my friends as well as teachers to complete goals unrelated to school, and gave me the ability to have extra time to ask questions that related to the career of interior design and teaching which influenced my decisions that brought me to where I am today.

Teacher disconnect

One thing I remembered in my lived experience was the disconnect teacher had when interacting with students. Teacher all looked the same to me (White, Italian, old) and usually did not connect with the students body of Black, Asian and Hispanic students. It felt very one sided when the expectation of teacher had did not fit in the reality of students. I once had a teacher who yelled at the whole class for not having a printer and yell "printers are not expensive, you can buy one and print your homework". This type of disconnect drove students away from wanting to learn as the teacher did not support us but rather blamed us for our personal struggles.

Through my lived experiences in education there was one event in which a well known leader in country had died which I could really care less about. This happened in grade 10 and my math teacher pulled me aside and asked me if I was okay. At first I was very confused and said yes in a confused way and asked if I did anything wrong. He just said no I just hear about the news and wanted to know if you and your family were okay and I just stated that both my mom and I could really care less and same with my family, the only person who was upset was my grandfather. I know he meant well with asking me if I was okay, it just showed me how much he cared about his students wellbeing.
