"Supposing he doesn't want your help, your bleeding-heart-liberal help, and he yells at you, and you are shamed in the marketplace, the public square, your politics and tendencies revealed for what they truly are, self-righteous and discriminatory" (102).

Still in the section describing the Kitty Genovese murder, Slater entertains some of the notions why we don't help others when we see they are in need. While in psychology we call this social loafing and it is mostly because we assume someone else will take responsibility--especially in large crowds--the "rationalizations" we create seem only guilty in hindsight.
A man has a heart attack on a park bench? Oh, I wasn't sure if he was having a heart attack, and I didn't want to seem too friendly if I did decide to help him.
... Really?

" 'People think people before them have given. And so they do too.' We are driven by imitation" (105)

This quote... startled me. We have already learned about the tendency to copy others in psychology, through conformity or influence or whatever reason. That was before the election. I forget who it was who said it to me, but at one point my attention was called to the fact that we have Donald Trump going into the White House plus the fact that children are very impressionable equals something along the lines of condoning children to behave as he has. Trump's been called many things. Misogynist, homophobic, racist, pick your poison. But we are driven by imitation. Will so many children follow him as a role model? Will we relapse into the times before so many recent steps towards freedom and equality for gender, sexuality, ethnic backgrounds?
