I, Timothy O'Sullivan was born in Ireland in 1840. My family moved to America when I was very young. When I was only 15 years old I went to work for Mathew Brady, A famous photographer. When the civil war started, I decided to fight for the North. I served in the army for one year as a lieutenant then was discharged from the army. Then I proceeded to return to Mathew Brady's photo team and begin photographing again. "O'Sullivan's experience as a soldier helped him with his work. He lived with the Army of the Potomac for 3 years. He often risked his life and twice had a camera knocked from his hands by shell fragments." (Photo by Brady.)

In 1863, I stopped working for Mathew Brady and decided to join forces with my colleague Alexander Gardner. Our Goal was to photograph the civil war. I took pictures that showed the devastation and destruction of the war. I often took pictures of dead soldiers after battles to show what the war was doing. Many of my photographs were featured in my colleagues book, "Gardner's Photographic sketchbook of the war". I played a big part in showing the war to the public.

As a photographer, it was my job to show the people what the war looked like. I had to go to very dangerous places to show what is really like during the Civil war. I also served as a Lieutenant for a year, which gave me lots of experience that I needed for my photography. The civil war shaped my life by giving me an opportunity to show the world my gifts and to pursue my passion.
