Grade Three - Samples and Stuff

It is evident that the students at Airlie have a diverse community and population given the samples of work. In writing alone, that the students have learning concerns, are potentially ESL families, and have a lack of access to background knowledge and experiences for the picture prompt that was used.
It is interesting to compare their "one" and "two" with our "one" sample because our "one" may fall into their category "two" as it has richer vocabulary than their "two" sample demonstrated.

The difference in evidence between the grade one samples and threes are interesting ... some of the grade one samples are more substantial than those of the grade three samples. Grade three was missing samples in the 3 and 4 range.

It was difficult to compare the samples as the prompts were quite different from each other. Overall, our prompt generated a personal narrative while the picture prompt generated a list of what they could see in the picture. The personal narrative led to more variety, vocabulary and overall content.

We are wondering how long students had to write, as their pieces seem shorter and less developed. The writing samples we chose seem more developed/complete and are comparatively stronger overall. It would be interesting to have both schools write about the same prompt, and within the same parameters (same instructions and timeframe).

The samples seemed to be marked less strictly than our exemplars. The content seems less developed and more like a list than a personal narrative. The work demonstrates the diverse socioeconomic background and developmental differences of the students in both area 3 and 5.

It would be helpful to have the criteria to go with a sample so we can understand the decisions

For May 2019 Sample...
- consider the same prompt as their school
- provided the same writing time and instruction
- provide the criteria to expose assessment decisions
- think about which prompts provide the best writing from kids
- consider a time of year where we commit to calibrating yearly - how many times? when?
- ask other schools to add their pieces moving forward
