Significance: The death of Franz Ferdinand was the immediate cause of World War I.

Life: Franz Ferdinand, archduke of Austria-Este was assassinated on June 28th, 1914. The death of Archduke Rudolph, in 1889, put Franz Ferdinand next in succession to the throne after his father, who later died in 1896. He had done many things for his nation such as, trying to restore the Austro-Russian understanding and making political reforms that would have strengthened the crown and weakened that of the Magyars against the other nationalities in Hungary and by 1906 he became inspector general of the army.

Assassination: 1914, June 28th, Franz Ferdinand was in the Austro-Hungarian province of Bosnia and Herzegovina since he was the inspector general of the army. He and his wife were traveling through Sarajevo in an open topped car, a group of nationalists through a grenade at their car hoping to kill them but it had bounced off. Several hours later a young nationalist, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip, shot both him and his wife in their car with a pistol. The political objective of the assassination was to free Bosnia and Herzegovina of Austria-Hungarian rule and establish a common South Slav state. The assassination caused the July Crisis, which was a series of multiple milihellotary and political escalations that led to Austria-Hungary declaring war on Serbia and marked the start of World War I.

The large and pointless slaughter during WWI destroyed Russia's economy along with its prestige as a powerful European Nation. Corrupt government and inefficiency were rampant in the empire, and minorities wanted to escape Russian domination. These are reasons why several Peasants, workers, and soldiers decided to revolt against the government.

Significance: Several Jewish homes and Jewish-owned businesses were destroyed, and many Jewish people died.

The Night Of Broken Glass: In 1938, from November 9th to the 11th devastation reigned in Germany. A great hatred and abuse towards Jewish people led to what was known as, “Kristallnacht”, or “The Night of Shattered Glass”. Kristallnacht was a period of time between November 9th through the 11th of 1938 where Nazi leaders burnt down and destroyed Jewish homes, Jewish-owned businesses, and Synagogues.

While these buildings burnt to ashes, the police force and firemen were told not to interfere. They let the buildings burn and only interacted if the fire decided to spread to neighboring, non-Jewish buildings. That night 91 Jews were killed, it was truly a devastating day in Jewish history and world history. After this set of events, this terrible night was known as Kristallnacht, for the degrading set of events that took place.

This event was set forth by the Nazi Party officials, and programs throughout greater Germany. These violet rioters wreaked havoc upon hundreds of Synagogues. In addition to this information, they looted and defiled more than seven thousand Jewish-owned businesses and other establishments. These people were monsters, and after their attack, the German government made dozens of laws put forth a deprivation of property and means of livelihood from the Jewish people. Kristallnacht was a terrible day in history but needs to be remembered to honor the lives of those who were affected on that dreadful day.
