A famous legend that characterizes the town of Benevento concerns witches.
The characters of this legend are "Janare", a kind of witches that lived in the town according  the popular imagination.  The legend goes back to the Longobard period and it tells that the witches met under a wallnut tree near river "Sabato"  and they evoked the devil under the shape of a dog or a billygot.A magic spell that many women accused of witch craft recounted during the trials.
"Unguent, unguent,
carry me to the walnut tree of Benevento, above the water and the wind and above all other bad weather".
 Later the witches have become the symbol of our town. Nowdays they are the symbol of the city, the emblem of our soccer team, and they have given the name to the liquor "Strega", one of the best in the world.
