Black Covid Rates are Way Up

Ella- In black and BIPOC communities in some cases, the percent of that race in the population is less than the cases. The ratio of cases to people in those communities is disproportionately high. In Washington, especially Latinos and Hispanics suffer the most, even though they are a small percentage of the population.

Bipoc Communities Are Already At A High Risk

Ella- Historically black and BIPOC communities have higher health risks, and a weakened immune system. Lower income, lower insurance, worse healthcare, plus covid is a BIPOC crisis. The people who suffer most are people with underlying health conditions, which would be more black communities. Due to lower income, BIPOC communities are forced to to buy and eat cheaper, less healthy food. This can lead to low blood sugar, obesity, and diabeties which increases covid risk. Black people also have a weakened immune system for some reason.

Hunter- Sometimes, even though it is safer to stay home, people from BIPOC communities are forced to go out in the world and work, making them higher at risk. they also have a history of weakened immune system, even though there's no evidence that people of color have genetics its said that black people are more amine to diabetes and other diseases making them more susceptible to covid.

Ella- We can make sure that the doctors and physicians are very diverse. We can recruit more diverse doctors and people from racial minorites. It actually helps the patient to see someone their same race. They feel more calm and they can listen to advice better. We can also prevent “food deserts” where there are places in black communities who have low income, where they can only afford to buy cheap junk food to feed their families. This leads to low blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity, which puts them at a higher risk of death from covid.

Ella- Studies show that black patients do better medically and emotionally if the healthcare workers caring for them are their same race. It gives them a sense of reassurance and familiarity and are more likely to be able to ge better from covid.
