By the end of the novel both the creature and Victor had become one and the same person. They had both been through similar things, they went through misery, anger, and they were both so overcome with feeling of revenge that they were united through their want for revenge. They are also similar in the way that they blamed their actions and the things that happened to them on other people. Victor blamed all the things that happened to him as fate, and he doesn’t really take responsibility for any of his actions until the end when all his friends were dead, and then he said it was his fault for creating the creature. Th ecreature blames his misery on the way that other people treat him, and the way that it’s Victor fault for abandoning him, while at the end he says that his misery was more than Victor’s. -RA

Neither Victor nor the creation is truly more evil than the other. Both initially had a good intention or good purpose, as Victor wanted to understand the world’s secrets and “Dougy” was created to further science and create a new race, both underwent different types of isolation or rejection that built in each other. Victor’s initial revulsion after awakening the creature, combined with other rejection from literally everyone else, turned it against the world and set it apart from all natural nature. Victor set himself apart from the rest of humanity by shutting out his friends and family for years at a time. Once the murders begin, Victor starts to realize and feel the guilt he has. He talks about how he should declare himself guilty with Justine’s punishment, as he created the murderer himself. By being outright separated or by separating themselves, Victor and the creature start to become similar characters, driven towards hate and revenge for the actions that both characters chose to make.
- Andrew D

Mary Shelley also portrays the social disconnect and differences from people with different nationalities and cultures. When Safie joins the De Lacey family, she knows very little of the De Lacey’s language and social views of the area. “The prospect of marrying a Christian and remaining in a country where women were allowed to take a rank in society was enchanting to her”. This scene acknowledges the differences of social and economic classes, and cultural social divides as well. This type of diversity is also seen in the creature. Victor’s creation is shunned by the population, and has to learn it own way around the native language and social cues.
- Andrew

In the story, Mary Shelley portrays women in blatantly unfair situations brought about by men. This seen when Safie and her family are forced to suffer for her father’s missteps, in the way Elizabeth’s mental and physical health are majorly affected by Victor, and of course, Justine unfair execution. By portraying these situations as obviously unfair as they are, Mary Shelley is able to draw parallels between the world she was living in at the time, and advocate for how unjust it was. Or something...
-McEthan

Justine is blamed for something that Victor had caused and despite lack of evidence, she is condemned. Mary Shelley uses these characters to show how females were thought of during this time and how the men had more of an advantage with more power and support. EH

With in the book Shelley adds instances of the real world. The gender equality of men and women, when Justine had her trial she wasn’t able to defend herself. The death of William was because of the creature but Justine had to take the fall. Adding to that the women of the story are treated unfairly or die and fall because they take the (philosophical) ‘bullet’ for the men. The social statues of rich and the poor, she showed this with details like where Elizabeth was adopted from and how she was described in general. Also judgement, the creature was judged for how he was seen instead of how it is as a ‘person’. This ultimately helped lead to its downfall. Elizabeth was also judged because of statues connecting both. -C.O

This reflects the struggles that women faced during that time period.

Another point to be made is the isolation and rejection that society can create in people. The De Lacy family, themselves outcasts, rejected the appearance of the monster. Even Walton felt abhorrent towards the monster when he first saw it. Victor isolated himself from society as well, which shows the idea of it both ways.
-Andre

I felt that the creature was an essential part to the story because although it would’ve been good to have killed him far back, if he would’ve been killed then Victor wouldn’t have realized how much damage he caused to himself and to people and Victor wouldn’t have taught Walton that knowledge is truly bad if you seek too much of it. Many happy things would’ve happened if he got killed earlier but this whole battle between Victor and the creature was what kept us readers in suspense. X.C
