F. Scott Fitzgerald included songs in The Great Gatsby for several reasons. The main reason being to create the mood for certain scenes in the novel. He also used them as a form of symbolism, and this symbolism is that they represent the glamour and lavishness of the Jazz Age. Fitzgerald himself said that the Jazz Age "...was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire." (BlogSpot), which is exactly what the songs are meant convey to the readers.

The lyrics that are important, and are also included in the novel, are, "In the morning, in the evening, ain't we got fun---One thing's sure and nothing's surer, the rich get richer and the poor get--children. In the meantime, in between time---." (Fitzgerald, page 95).
3. "The Sheik of Araby" is sung by Fats Waller, and is a jazz song. The lyrics "I'm the Sheik of Araby, your love belongs to me. At night when you're asleep, into your tent I'll creep." (Fitzgerald, page 78), are included in the novel.

Fitzgerald mentions "Beale Street Blues" as a way to represent how Daisy's life at this time was full of "... sadness and suggestiveness..." (Fitzgerald, page 151) . The song talks about how the person has "... seen the lights of gay Broadway,..." and "... The seven wonders of the world..." (TheAvidListener). It is describing how the person has seen everything there is to see, and how they are looking for a way to gain excitement. Daisy is experiencing this as well, and the song creates a gloomy and desperate mood as Fitzgerald goes on to describe how she is going on "... half a dozen dates a day with half a dozen men,..." (Fitzgerald, page 151).

Fitzgerald utilizes this song to create a mood of mystery and love. The lyrics he uses in the book are there to intensify the thought of how much Gatsby loves Daisy, because he "'... bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.'" (Fitzgerald, page 78). The lyrics "'... Your love belongs to me..." (Fitzgerald, page 78) represent how Gatsby feels as though Daisy's love "belongs" to him, not Tom.

This song is included to create an uplifting and joyful mood. It shows the sense of happiness that Daisy and Gatsby must have been feeling while they were spending time together without Tom or a huge crowd of people being around them. This feeling was intensified when Nick "... went out of the room and down the marble steps into the rain, leaving them there together." (Fitzgerald, page 96).

It also conveys the same mood due to the fact that the song is about love and partying, which is shown when she says, "Tell me I'm your national anthem, ... baby, heaven's in your eyes, ... Money is the reason we exist, ..." (Youtube). This relates to the song Fitzgerald uses because they both can demonstrate how Gatsby admires Daisy.

It creates the same unhappy mood as the song from the book, which is perfectly seen when the singer says, "Do I wanna know, If this feeling flows both ways, Sad to see you go, Sorta hopin' that you'd stay." (Youtube). Both this song and the one Fitzgerald utilizes can be used to show how sad and desperate Daisy was feeling without Gatsby being there.

They both also convey a mood of selfishness, and this can be especially heard in this song when he confesses, "I'm selfish I know, But I don't ever wanna see you with him." (Youtube). Like the song Fitzgerald uses, it can be used to show how Gatsby is jealous of Tom and Daisy's relationship, and that he believes that Daisy should be with him instead
