Spoken interaction Prompt

1. What are the benefits of staying mentally and physically active?

One benefit of staying mentally active is that it helps us to develop and practice our positive mindset. Having a positive mindset at a old age actually helps them to have a sense of belonging and a purpose to live. For examplw, In the video, you can see that the elderlies are able to sociallise better in groups and a willing to go out and excersise.this shows that having a positive mindset helps poeple of all ages as it makes us more willing to explore out of our comfort zone and out from our negative mindset.

One benefit of staying physically active is that it helps us to strengthen our bones and muscles and prevent diseases. It makes us stay active and allows us do our daily activities withougt trouble . Wjth strength, i remembered someone once said that being physically active and fit helps us to be mentally positive, recuce symptoms of depression from regualr excersie. this makes our body more active like a happy fuel. From my experience , during secondary 3 p,it was a rough year becasue of leadetship roles and studies and problems. The only way i could rpdestress and remove my anger was through pe lesson by goiing very hard on myself to loose that negativity in me. It made me feel better after pe always. Maybe being physically fit was my aim but i used pe as a guide point whenever im overloaded with emotions that i didnt wanna hurt people with. Wigh this, being physically active goes hand in hand with mental health for our body and mind.

2. ‘Age should not be an excuse for keeping fit.’ What is your opinion?.

In my opinion, abe should be an excuse for keeping u fit is because i believe that there will be a certain age and time where or incident that prevents poeple from keeping fit such as very bad sickness, stroke or bone injuriess. For example,my grandfather who had 3 strokes and now he cant move much and has a very hard time to do basic tasks. So this prevents him from being active and keeping fit. I ahve a grandmother in johor who now has a hard time to walk becuase her joints are getting weaker. Therefore, age should be an excuse for keeping fit as there are some measurements where you cant do much work.

Another reason why I believe age should be an excuse for keeping fit is because of because of lifestyle. In singapore, things get busier such as work and school schedule. This is becasue as we age,we get more work load that prevents us from having our leasure time. Which for some, our leasure time could excersing to be physically fit. For example, my dad used to have time with me when younger, able to send me to the playground pr park and cycling with me and my sister. But now my dad goes to work at mrt at 2200 to 0800. He comes home and still have areends to do and his only sleep is from 12 to 5 before he goes to take care of my grandfather. Another example is i use to have time to sleep in the afternoon in primary school but now as im in secondary school,I rather spend time my afternoon by studying for exams and complet my loads of homework. Therefore, age shoiuld be an excuse for keeping fit because of our lifestyle.

Overall age is an excuse for keeping fit because of lifestyle and Age-related decline in physical abilities that can be mitigated with exercise

In the video, the elderly do different exercises to stay fit. They do seated leg lifts and seated marches to improve strength and coordination. For their upper body, they do arm raises and shoulder rolls to increase flexibility. They also do gentle stretching to keep their muscles flexible and reduce stiffness.

Besides these, they practice balance exercises like standing on one leg while holding a support to prevent falls. One fun activity they do is skipping with a skipping rope, where two people hold the rope and one skips in the middle, which helps with coordination and cardiovascular health. They also play capteh, a traditional game that improves their agility and hand-eye coordination.

To do these activities, skills like balance, coordination, teamwork , communication, and basic strength are important. Personal qualities such as discipline and motivation help them stay committed to exercising regularly. Patience is needed because progress can be slow. Having a positive attitude also encourages them to keep active and enjoy staying healthy.

Good morning/afternoon. In the video, I see a group of elderly individuals exercising with young children. What’s truly inspiring is how these seniors are not only staying physically active but also displaying incredible strength, balance, and energy something we don’t always associate with old age. The children seem to be enjoying themselves too, creating a positive, and fun environment bonding well with the elderly

Question 1: What are the benefits of staying mentally and physically active?

There are many benefits to staying both mentally and physically active. Firstly, physical activity helps improve overall health, especially for the elderly. It keeps the heart strong, muscles flexible, and reduces the risk of illnesses like diabetes or heart disease.

Question 2: “Age should not be an excuse for keeping fit.” What is your opinion?

I strongly agree with the statement that age should not be an excuse for keeping fit. The video itself is a perfect example these elderly individuals are showing us that with the right mindset and effort, staying fit is always possible. While it’s true that our bodies slow down with age.

In fact, keeping fit becomes even more important as we age, because it helps maintain independence and self-confidence. Regular activity can also improve sleep and reduce stress. Often, the biggest barrier is not physical ability, but attitude. If we believe we can do it and take the first step, age becomes just a number.

Staying mentally and physically active is very important for our health and well-being.

For example, when we exercise, our body becomes stronger, we have more energy, and we feel less stressed. At the same time, doing mental activities like reading, solving puzzles or learning new things helps keep our brain sharp.

This is because physical activity improves our fitness and mood by releasing happy hormones, while mental activity keeps our mind active and can prevent memory loss in the future. It also helps us focus better in school and handle stress more easily.

That’s why it’s good to stay active both physically and mentally, so we can stay healthy, think clearly, and feel better overall.

Another example as to why staying mentally and physically active is crucial for maintaining good health and overall well-being is that when we keep our minds and bodies active, it helps to improve our physical fitness and mental clarity, reducing the risk of illnesses.

For instance, regular exercise like jogging or playing sports such as badminton , soccer , and basketball strengthens our muscles and improves heart health, while activities such as reading or solving puzzles stimulate the brain and enhance memory.

Therefore, by staying mentally and physically active, we can lead healthier and happier lives, preventing diseases and boosting our mood.

One key quality is perseverance, working out at such an old age is definitely both challenging on the physical body and mind. When working out at such an old ripe age progress will definitely be slow, hence the elderly must have a strong sense of perseverance and not be discouraged that they are not making visible progress everyday. It may take several months at their age to gain maybe few grams of muscle. Hence the elderly must have a strong growth mindset and recognise their efforts they have put in staying consistent and fit.

Teamwork is essential when a group of people works together to achieve a common goal, such as playing a game of group skipping.
In this activity, everyone must communicate and coordinate their timing carefully to make sure each person jumps at the right moment without disrupting the rhythm of the rope.
If even one person is out of sync, the rope can get tangled or the game may stop, showing that success depends on each person doing their part while supporting others. Players often encourage one another, cheer when someone does well, and help when mistakes happen, which builds trust and a strong sense of cooperation.
Therefore, group skipping is not just a fun physical activity, it is also a great way to develop teamwork skills and build stronger relationships.

Physical activity plays a key role in maintaining good physical health.

When we engage in regular exercise, it strengthens our muscles, improves heart function, and increases overall stamina.

Activities like jogging, swimming, or cycling help to improve blood circulation and keep our weight in check, reducing the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Staying active also improves flexibility and coordination, which is especially important as we grow older.
Thus, regular physical activity is essential for building a healthier, stronger body and preventing long-term health problems.

Physical activity is an effective way to improve mental well-being.
When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins—natural chemicals that act as mood enhancers.
These endorphins help reduce stress, elevate mood, and can ease symptoms of mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. Regular exercise helps to maintain strength, flexibility, and balance, which is especially important for older adults to prevent injuries and improve mobility. Many elderly people who keep fit through walking, stretching, or even light strength training are able to enjoy a better quality of life.

Some people may argue that aging makes it harder to exercise due to weaker muscles or health problems. While it is true that our bodies change as we grow older, there are many forms of physical activity that can be adjusted to suit different age groups and fitness levels. Activities like yoga, swimming, tai chi, or even simple daily walks are gentle but effective ways to stay fit without putting too much strain on the body.

Planned response: From the video I watched, skills required branches.dddff out to a wide range of abilities.Particularly, physical s fitness component where strength, stamina, flexibility and endurance are crucial to perform the activities shown.anter example of a skill one must have is Sport-related techniques where one must know which muscle is they must activate to maneuver efficiently in a particular sport. For example, in the video, it shows a group of elderly paying chapteh. Chapteh is a sport that uses the leg muscles strictly in order to control the unpredictable movements of the chapteh itself.Hence,

Basic fundamental skills are very important for one to have to carry out these activities.

Personal qualities: On te other had, personal qualities is also a key factor required to perform those activities shown. Personal qualities such as discipline, commitment, perseverance and sportsmanship build nots only a healthy lifestyle but also long-lasting good relationship with others. Generally, elderly tend not to exercise as they are considered ‘too weak’ ‘vulnerable’ or they might even just refuse to exercise. However, in the video, it reflects a lot of these people doing/participating in various forms of exercises and sports that even die young people are not capable of doing . This shows that, having commitment, discipline and perseverance to take care of their health proofs that elderly can go beyond what they thought was their limits.

Staying mentally and physically active brings many benefits, especially for older people. Physically, regular movement helps improve balance, strength, and flexibility, which lowers the risk of falls or injuries. It also keeps the heart healthy and strengthens muscles, which are important for daily tasks. Mentally, doing things like puzzles, reading, or social activities can keep the brain sharp, improve memory, and reduce the risk of diseases like dementia. When someone stays active in both mind and body, they feel more confident, independent, and happy. Overall, it improves their quality of life and helps them live longer, healthier lives.

I completely agree with the statement that age should not be an excuse for keeping fit. Just because someone is older doesn’t mean they can’t exercise or stay healthy. In fact, it’s even more important for elderly people to keep moving so they can stay strong and avoid health problems. Of course, they might not do intense workouts like younger people, but there are always exercises that match their ability — like walking, stretching, or simple yoga. In the video we saw, the older people were clearly enjoying themselves and staying active, which shows that age doesn’t have to stop you. As long as they’re careful and motivated, anyone at any age can work towards staying fit.

First of all, I think determination is needed as many of these activities require strenuous training to master the skills it takes a lot of effort to build up muscles required to achieve a strong body, as shown in the video there was a much older man and he was able to successfully climb on the monkey bar this is actually a very difficult activity to do and even I struggle with it. When I was younger I was quite active and really liked doing physical activities, sometimes I would attempt to climb on the monkey bar but I always failed however with much determination I set myself to do it and eventually I managed to succeed and when that happened I felt very proud of myself being able to do something much people cannot. (Cannot remember if I linked) which is why I believe determination is very I important it will help us push ourselves and reach new heights.

Next, Perseverance as these activities are very difficult however with perseverance and much practice anyone will be able to do it. I remember last year when I did my NAPFA 2.4KM even though I tried my hardest I still failed and this made me very discouraged to do this years NAPFA test, a few months ago when training for the run, there were many instances where I wanted to give up as I wasn’t hitting the timing I set myself to achieve because of this it made me very frustrated however with much perseverance and with the saying in my mind practice makes perfect. I continuously practice and eventually I managed to pass my 2.4KM NAPFA run with flying colours (cannot remember if I link), making perseverance a must for doing activities like this as it allow us to

Therefore, I think determination and perseverance is needed in these activities to do them, without them it will be very difficult to even attempt the skills.

Planned response

First of all, a skill needed when doing these activities is having good stamina. This is because having good stamina allows you to exercise more and push yourself continuously. For example, during PE lesson when we are running 2.4km we are required to have good stamina in order to pass. In the past, when doing the run I will always get tired and give up half way through the run because of my weak stamina. However after strenuous training I managed to build up good stamina and pass my 2.4km run with flying colours. This is why having good stamina will allow you to push yourself continuously.

Secondly, a personal quality needed is perseverance because if you do not have perseverance you will give up easily and not achieve your goals. For example, when my grandmother was in her younger times she would always think that physical training is pointless because of this her health got weaker. Ever since she realised that exercising is very important, now although she struggles to do exercise due to her weak body, she perseveres through it and manages to exercise daily

In conclusion, skills and personal qualities needed is good stamina and perseverance because good stamina allows you to push yourself continuously and perseverance allows you to never give up.

There are many benefits of staying mentally and physically active such as for mentally allowing us to stay more focus during lesson times which is currently very important for us right now as we are only a few steps away until we sit for our N level examinations not only that also allowing us to get the much needed sleep we need to start our day feeling refresh. For me as I am preparing for my N level I am currently under a lot of stressed due to there big load that is on my shoulder this causes me to have issues with things such as sleeping or just relaxing properly in general, which affects my ability to learn in school and causes me to lack behind. I think some things which people can do to help stay mentally active is to allow your mind to relax by taking time of the stressful things and doing things that you actually enjoy. During the June holidays I took the time to rest and now and feeling ready to prepare for my examination Therefore, staying mentally active can allow us to relax better during tough times.

For physically the benefits are to have a strong and fit body. When we stay physically active by doing things like exercise it allows us to be more energetic during the day and not only that being physically fit also helps us be more educated on what our body actually needs. For example, My father is quite old because he is more prone to getting health issues, in the past his health was declining due to the lack of exercise he was doing and him eating a lot of unhealthy food such as curry chicken, However after reliasing this he started exercising and a few years after that he started eating healthy as he is now very concious of his health. This means that when you are physically active, you also get a change in mindset making you more concious of what you are eating. Therefore, staying physically active and help you be healthier now only becaused you exercise but also because you will likely have a change in mindset too.

In my opinion I strongly argee that age should not be an excuse for keeping fit as I make an effort to exercise every few days and eat healthy everyday however people who are my age group currently aren't exercising on a regular basic not only that they are constantly not eating greens and eating only meats and junk food, I have many friends who do not eat vetegtable and are shocked to know that I like them this makes me worry for not only them but also how my current generation will will grow up in the future as eating greens should be a norm however people think of it as a weird trait to have. I also have parents who are in the older age who exercise regularly and eat healthy food, making them very fit and super mobile compared to the people in their age. When I am in public I constantly see elderly people and also younger people on electric bikes and this makes me worry for how my future generation will be as I do not want the occurance of electric bikes to how people walk in the future. I think there are many ways to encourage people of all ages to exercise such as community centres to set up carnivals related to exercise where all age group can partake in to earn prizes by doing simple exercise. Therefore I think that age should not be an excuse for keeping fit as there are many ways to keep fit and it can be fun for everyone not only does keeping fit mean exercising only but also eating healthy too.

In the video, the elderly are performing a variety of physical activities such as playing chapteh, skipping rope, going across monkey bars, and even doing pull-ups. These activities may look simple, but they actually require a number of important skills and personal qualities.

First of all, physical coordination is essential. For example, playing chapteh and skipping rope require good hand-eye and foot-eye coordination. Without this skill, it would be difficult to time movements accurately or maintain balance while performing repetitive actions.

Secondly, they need a high level of physical strength and endurance. Doing pull-ups or moving across monkey bars needs strong arm, shoulder, and core muscles. For the elderly to achieve this, they must have put in consistent effort to build up their fitness level.

Another important skill is flexibility and balance. As people age, balance tends to weaken, so being able to move through activities like monkey bars without falling shows good body control and flexibility.

In terms of personal qualities, discipline and determination are key. These elderly individuals did not become fit overnight. It takes time and dedication to train regularly, stay motivated, and keep improving despite age-related challenges.

To do the activities shown in the video, the elderly people need both physical skills and strong mental skills such as determination and discipline. In the video, i see that they are doing physical exercises and activities such as playing capteh and swinging on monkey bars, which require balance, coordination, and some level of strength. These are basic physical skills that help with body movement and stability, especially for older adults.Besides physical ability, these exercises also require patience, a positive mindset, and the courage to stay active despite their age. Some elderly might feel discouraged because of their body pain or weakness to these type of exercise and activities, but with determination and a willingness to improve, they can still take part. Discipline is also important because regular practice in these exercises is needed to see results. In conclusion, the elderly need a mix of physical ability and strong personal qualities such as commitment, courage, and motivation to successfully do these exercises and stay healthy.Another important quality needed is a positive attitude and the willingness to interact socially. The elderly in the video are exercising together in a group, which shows they are open to teamwork and enjoy being in a social environment. Being socially active helps reduce feelings of loneliness and motivates them to keep exercising. A positive attitude also helps them to stay mentally strong, even when the exercises are tiring or challenging. Therefore, a cheerful and open-minded personality is just as important as physical ability when taking part in group exercises like these.

I think that the personal qualities that are required is to have a lot of perseverance and passion because most of the activities there would be one’s hobby or interest which would lead them to learn and gain the skills to do those activities. Many of the activities there require some of the elderly to use their bodies to carry them out, which needs them to have strength and flexibility because of how fragile they are as they grow older. Thus, to participate in those activities, many will need strength, endurance, knowledge and skills which are required for each activity. For example, hanging and swinging on monkey bars is fun yet needs a lot of strength and endurance due to your body having to carry your whole body weight especially while swinging. Another example is for table tennis, you need passion and interest to play the sport because there is a lot of techniques and ways to play. Further more, you’ll also need to learn before playing because without knowing the rules, it wouldn’t be a fun or safe environment for you or anyone around you to play in.

staying mentally and physically active brings many benefits, especially for elderly people. Maintaining physical fitness helps improve regular movements such as balance, strength, flexibility and endurance. These exercises improves muscle power and burns excess fats which ultimately reduces the risk of them getting injured and or chronic diseases such as diabetes, coronary heart disease and obesity. On the other hand , staying mentally fit also helps one improve cognitive function, enhanced emotional well-being, and a greater sense of purpose and self-worth. This can be achieved through actively participating in sports itself as studies has shown that being active physically increases mental health. Alternatively, one can also try other games that involves cognitive skills. Such as playing chess , solving puzzles or sudoku. Hence, staying physically and mentally fit helps elderly live a longer and a better quality of life.

Yes I agree with the statement that age should not be an excuse to not engage in sports/exercises. As one grows older, one should be the engaging in sports more as their body is now more prone to getting injured/diseases. Hence, to avoid those, they must keep themselves active. Elderly do not need to do intense workouts , they can just do some that’s within their capabilities such as tai chi, swimming or even just walking. As long as it contributes to stronger , healthier body, keeping oneself fit is important regardless of age

Do you think students have enough opportunities to develop their presentation skills? Why or why not?

I do not think that all students have enough opportunities to develop their presentation skills. Student leaders and committees gain multiple opportunities to develop their presentation skills through sharing and presenting various topics on stage during morning assembly. Similarly, some CCA leaders may also gain opportunities to share topics related to their CCA activities towards their juniors or to the school during morning assembly. These are great opportunities to develop student’s presentation skills as they have an idea of how to speak and present in front of an audience. However, many students are not given such opportunities by the school and teachers as they do not have enough reputation to trust that they can confidently present in front of an audience. The only opportunity they can get to present is when they are representing special activities and events for the school, or during English lessons where they are given opportunities to present in front of the class.

How important are communication skills in the workplace? Why do you say so?

Communication in a workplace is very important. Being able to communicate with coworkers allows for easy interactions with them. It is especially more effective on employees with more experience in the workplace as they are easily able to communicate with newer coworkers and help them when they are struggling. Being able to communicate properly with others also helps with coordination and strategic plannings as others would be able to understand situations easily and are able to take action and support each other. Having good communication can improve overall team morale as there will be less frustration between employees when explaining or describing situations with each other, causing an improvement in work-life in the workplace. The employees will then be happier and will enjoy going to work more.

Do you think that students have enough opportunities to develop their presentation skills? Why or why not?

I do not think students have enough opportunities to develop their presentation skills.[point 1] This is firstly because they are not provided with sufficient amount of resources to develop their skills. Especially during lessons such as chemistry, provide low stake opportunities for the students to practice presentation and learn from the teacher’s feedback on their presentation. Caused by the time constraints brought on by limited time that is given. [example] Therefore students are not able to learn and develop their presentation skills.[link]

Another reason for why I think students do not have enough opportunities is because most presentations are done by the student’s with leadership positions such as the councillors and the student leaders.[point] Giving students without these positions to not have much experience in these roles. An example of this is during CCE lessons the chairperson is responsible for presenting information to the class, while the students are just mere audience.[Example] Not giving them much of a chance to develop their presentation skills.[link]

should the activity shown in the video be encouraged among young people? Why or why not.

I believe that the virtual reality game shown in the video where two people are wearing virtual reality sets while holding a toy gun should not be encouraged among young people such as teenagers and children. This is because playing virtual reality games or other online games such as Roblox and mobile legends can often cause children or teenagers to gain an addiction to their electronic devices. This can affect their academic performance and their social development due to the excessive screen time which can play a distracting role for their studies, additionally it can also cause children to grow up dependant on digital devices which can affect the children’s social interaction skills with real life people. Other possible effects of getting addicted to technology includes sleep deprivation, increased risk of depression and anxiety which can affect both physical and mental health. Thus, young people such as children and teenagers should avoid playing too much virtual reality and other games to prevent getting the negative side effects of increased screen time. Hence parents and other relatives should ensure children receive minimum screen time and ensure to monitor the games their children choose to play as violent games can also promote violent behaviours.

Would you rather visiting a place in person or virtually. why?

For me, I would prefer visiting a place in person rather than virtually. This is because visiting a place in person allows us to experience the surroundings in a deeper level as we are able to observe everything in all angles which makes the experience visiting the place more real and exciting. From my experience during the Covid -19 quarantine period, many weren’t able or were afraid to leave the house due to the infectious virus thus all we could do was to visit places virtually due to many places being closed. Visiting places virtually felt unreal and was not as exciting as it would be visiting the place in person, thus when the Covid 19 cases decreased the first thing my parents did was to bring us to places like jewel at the Changi Airport. Visiting jewel in person and not just through a screen made the experience more meaningful and unforgettable as we could observe every details more in depth and could actually walk around and try new activities in the mall, meanwhile through a screen we could only just sit and relax. Thus I believe that everyone should visit places physically instead of virtually as they would not be able to get the well deserved experience the places were meant to give.

In this digital age, what are the advantages and disadvantages of having more activities going online?

One advantage of having activities online is that it is a convenience for people who uses the internet as they would be able to learn new skills, study and shop in the comfort of their own homes with just one click. For example, students are able to use learning platforms such as the student learning space (SLS) or google classroom to access study resources sent by their teachers for them to better understand and study at their own time and pace. In my family, using the internet to shop online is common as my parents enjoy shopping on their devices instead of going out after a long day of work. Additionally i also often use the internet for my baking hobby where I’ll use online recipes to create new dishes for my family to try. Thus, online activities gives convenience to people of all ages allowing everyone to gain different opportunities.

However some disadvantages I am aware of are cyberattacks and privacy issues the internet brings. This is due to unsecured websites and internet hackers that causes these misfortunes. Thankfully in school we have cyber wellness lessons which teaches us how to ensure our safety while using online activities, some actions we learnt to do are ensuring our passwords and secure and not shared with others while ensuring the websites we use are secure from hackers. These actions allow us to lower the risks of cyberattacks and furthermore we can also spread these information that we learnt to our friends and family members. Thus even though online activities brings us convenience, we must also take extra percussions towards keeping our privacy and secure safe.

a) Do you think students have enough opportunities to develop presentation skills? Why Or why not?

No, I do not think students have enough opportunities to develop presentation skills.teachers tend to focus more on written work and exams because teachers usually spend more time helping students prepare for exams and covering the syllabus instead of giving them time to practise on presentation. For instance, in many of my subjects like Math and Science, we dont have chances to speak or present our answers out loud as mostly the subject calculating equations and trying the solve the problem which cause many students lack confidence because they don’t get enough practice. Presenting in front of others in class is a skill that requires to be built up over time, but if students don’t practise regularly, they remain shy or afraid. from my experience,I’ve seen classmates who know the answer but don’t dare to speak during presentations because they’re scared of being judged by their teachers and classmates.Personally, I used to be very nervous when speaking in front of my class. I would forget my points or speak too fast but after a few chances to present during group work, I started to improve. One memorable experience was during a Humanities project last year. My group had to present our research on climate change. We prepared slides and did research, but on the day of the presentation, one of our group mates was sick, so I had to speak for a longer time. At first, I panicked as i was not confident , but I reminded myself to be confident and focused on explaining clearly. We presented in front of the whole class and even the teacher praised our effort. I felt proud and more confident after that experience. so in my opinion, students don’t have enough chances to practise presentation skills because of the focus on exams and the lack of confidence among students. I hope schools will include more speaking activities in different subjects so that students can build confidence and with more support and practice, I believe every student can become a confident and effective speaker.
