Great! Thank you for that. I have been looking at content descriptors that apply with this unit. They are just from the 'Design and Technologies'. FOUNDATION TO YEAR 2 - Explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to produce designed solutions(ACTDEK004 - Scootle ). Identify how people design and produce familiar products, services and environments and consider sustainability to meet personal and local community needs (ACTDEK001 - Scootle ). Generate, develop and record design ideas through describing, drawing and modelling (ACTDEP006 - Scootle ). Use materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques to safely make designed solutions (ACTDEP007 - Scootle ). Sequence steps for making designed solutions and working collaboratively (ACTDEP009 - Scootle ) . YEAR 3 TO YEAR 4 - Investigate the suitability of materials, systems, components, tools and equipment for a range of purposes (ACTDEK013 - Scootle ). Select and use materials, components, tools, equipment and techniques and use safe work practices to make designed solutions (ACTDEP016 - Scootle ). Plan a sequence of production steps when making designed solutions individually and collaboratively (ACTDEP018 - Scootle ).

I was just about to post the same thing lol. Achievement standards for Year 2 - Students create and evaluate their ideas and designed solutions based on personal preferences. They communicate design ideas for their designed products, services and environments using modelling and simple drawings. If we have students create their own arcade game, and follow a design process that includes drawing a design before construction, i think this meets the standards right?

That sounds like a great plan. And that video would be really good for them to get ideas from. I've had a quick look and it might fit in with Year 2 Chemical Science which sounds weird but the content descriptor is: Different materials can be combined for a particular purpose (ACSSU031 - Scootle ). And the elaboration is 'suggesting why different parts of everyday objects such as toys and clothes are made from different materials' and 'Identifying materials such as paper that can be changed and remade or recycled into new products'. It's pretty vague and I will keep looking. Sustainability would be a good cross curriculum priority.

The local council has proposed an end to the home recycling program citing mounting costs and overseas contractors as the reason. The school has decided to use this decision to explore the benefits of decreasing the amount of rubbish being sent to land fills by investigating alternative ways recyclable materials may be reused. Inspired by the video “Caine’s Arcade” (Mullick, 2012) about a boy who transformed empty boxes and other materials at his fathers workshop into games, this Year 2 class aims to design and create their own games as a lunch time reward for their peers. Students will learn about recycling and reusable materials, design, test, and make judgements about the created games in a collaborative group environment. Games will be evaluated by peers on use of recyclable materials, functionality and enjoyment.

The collaborative nature of the task is an authentic vehicle to include Heath and Physical Education learning. Personal, social, and community health (ACARA, 2019b) achievements will be targeted as students interpret, acknowledge, and respond to others feelings inclusively during group work. The culminating lunch time reward event will also be advertised in a corresponding media arts project. A presentation made by students will be shown on parade, telling the story of reusing materials as a response to environmental concerns, and advertising the arcade games for play.

I'm not really sure how long a design brief has to be but I just wrote this one.

With the Ipswich council removing the recycling program, exploring the impact recycling or not recycling can have on the environment and how we as a community can help has become increasingly more prevalent. As a class, it has been decided that students will create an ‘arcade’ game using recyclable and reusable materials. Students will explore which materials are recyclable and reusable, and how they can be reused to make other objects. They will work collaboratively to design and create a game that other members of the class and school can play during an ‘in break reward session’. The design process will teach the students to select materials that can be reused and recycled, and how to implement their design and collaborative skills to create their game.
