Some became very hostile to the freedmen.

Were forced to do all normal household chores and farm duties themselves or pay there workers.

Many entered sharecropping and established deals with freedmen and reestablished their former position as master through a new way.

This is when sharecroppers tiled the land that belonged to there former master in exchange for some of the crops.

Had to compete with African American sharecroppers when they marketed crops.

Many who felt a sense of social superiority to slaves now felt the vigilante groups that terrorized African Americans.

Some small farmers from non-slave holding districts  cooperated with the Republicans because they would benefit from the educational and economic opportunities they offered.
