         <description><![CDATA[<div>As a result of war and the thirteenth amendment, plantation owners lost their labor forces and a very large part of their wealth.<br><br>Some became very hostile to the freedmen.<br><br>Were forced to do all normal household chores and farm duties themselves or pay there workers.<br><br>Many entered sharecropping and established deals with freedmen and reestablished their former position as master through a new way.<br><br>This is when sharecroppers tiled the land that belonged to there former master in exchange for some of the crops.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Small farmers who did not own slaves were not directly affected financially by their liberation<br><br>Had to compete with African American sharecroppers when they marketed crops.<br><br>Many who felt a sense of social superiority to slaves now felt the vigilante groups that terrorized African Americans.<br><br>Some small farmers from non-slave holding districts  cooperated with the Republicans because they would benefit from the educational and economic opportunities they offered. <br><br>They were called "scalawags" by other South Carolina</div>]]></description>
