Life in Roanoke was really rough. They had bad land to farm on. Through the cold winters a lot of people died of starvation. In 1587 John White and his crew set off to go to Roanoke, many of the problems the early settlers had also happened to them. John went back to England and when he came back with food, he saw that everybody was gone and he couldn't find them. The first settlers had many problems like the people in Roanoke had. John Smith, the captain said that they need to work hard or they don't get to eat. Unfortunately, Smith got a bad infection and had to go back to England. Without leadership the colonist quit working. Only some survived harsh winters, starvation, disease, and injuries. In 1612 John Rolfe brought tobacco and started to grow it and sell it. The Pilgrims left England because of religious reasons. The Church wouldn't make the changes they wanted, so they set off to North America.
