I am a current a teacher and preparing to become a school counselor. My audience for this guide includes school counselors, teachers, administrators, and other education stakeholders who need to understand the role confidentiality plays in counseling services.

My topic is confidentiality in school counseling. I chose this topic because confidentiality is the foundation of the counselor to student relationship, yet it must also be balanced with legal requirements, parental rights, and ethical standards. Students must be informed about the limits of confidentiality so they understand both the protections and exceptions.

By understanding confidentiality it has shaped my growth as a teacher and future counselor. I recognize that protecting students’ privacy helps build trust and safety, but I also see the importance of knowing the clear limits set by law. This balance influences my goal of becoming a counselor who is both ethical and legally compliant.

Personally, I feel strongly that transparency about confidentiality helps students feel secure while still protecting them in moments of crisis. Learning how confidentiality intersects with legal and ethical codes has deepened my commitment to advocating for students, while respecting professional responsibilities. These lessons have inspired me to continue developing skills that support both student well-being and adherence to legal and ethical standards.
