I have used Dipity and MyHistro for authors and biographies, but I'm also planning to use them for travels, school activities, development of eTwinning projects... As a visual learner / teacher, I find them very important for organising and visualising info in time and space. As for art, I tend to use paintings, yes, and many, but basically for physical description and / or clothing followed by a simple research on the artist. Though I have long been familiar with virtual tours, I've never used virtual museums in my classes. Pictures of / from museums and / or paintings can also be used for a collaborative activity with Thinglink and that works great. Finally, these are very interesting tools, ideas and activities, but the reality is that it ends up being mostly me (perhaphs you, too, as Maxime Drouet also reported) to develop everything... it's almost impossible in one computer classroooms, sometimes even lacking internet access, to expect more. In my experience, what works best are definitely flipped lessons and collaborative activities! Besides, I feel that eventhough we are dealing with a generation of "screenagers", I have to keep remembering them of their school tasks/duties and to stay focus. Is it only me???Yesterday at
GEORGETTE'S DISCUSSION 2: TRANSREALITY AND LOCATION GAMES IN EDUCATION - YES OR NO?

WE WANTED TO KNOW:

What is your opinion on gamification? Do transreality and location-based games have benefits for student learning? Or are they too distracting and a waste of time?

YOU REPLIED:

Isabelle DufreneI think gamification is a good way to enhance students implication. They play at home and with friends, so it's a great idea to use their interest in our class. I use geocaching with them, first in our school as they can test the game, then in outside learning game: in an orientation game, then in an historical game about our city. They play but they're focused on the learning goal, because if they learn, they win the game. It's not a wasting time because they collaborate for the game, and parents are needed, so it's all benefit for the class climate. Montaigne said "Seated my thoughts fall asleep", he was a great philosopher, and we probably can trust him.February 23 at 12:56am · Edited · Unlike · 6

Cristina NicolaitaI used to use games and quizzes related to maps in my projects and some other games as a reward at the end of a successful on-line test. It's simple. The way in which games function with a system of challenges that become even more difficult as the levels go higher, the utilization of the gained knowledge for the next level, the system of reward for doing something and the bonus that you gain and generally the way in which games are structured undoubdedly is so special that motivates children and not only them to catch up with them. A well planned Location game can be very motivating, and they will have a lot of learning (GPS, position system, smartphone as a working tool, content of the subject, etc.), but on the other side they need a technology device (using Byod) and they can be distracted.

WE ASKED YOU:

A lot of Georgette's tasks are map-related. Maps can be used on all devices, for most of them no registration is needed and students can easily create their own maps. Do you think maps can be used only in geography? Is it possible to use them in other subjects as well? How can you implement them in the subject you teach? Give one or more examples.

YOU ANSWERED:

Agnieszka KubiakIt is not true that we can use maps only in geography. I use maps very often in my English lessons. Students can find locations where the famous places in English speaking countries are. Maps are useful when the topic: countries is taught. I create maps in project work to mark places we visited, to link photos concerning our school or town. In my opinion maps can be used by teachers of all subjects. Everything depends on our creativity!February 22 at 10:55am · Like · 1

Efi Karagianniof course maps are not only for geography.I am a historian and I think they perfectly suit with history to show battle fields, routes, states extendin etc They are also useful for teaching art, about museums, monuments, popular rythms, places of action.Another idea is to be used at literature and tell the students find the places mentioned in the fiction for example.February 22 at 10:55am · Like · 3

Athina StakiaI always use maps for History lessonFebruary 22 at 10:56am · Like · 2

Γιώργος ΌλγαMaps can be used in other subjects not only in geography. Lots of places are mentioned in our coursebooks, so it's a nice idea for the students to exploit maps and visualize and realize the actual location of these places on the globe. Besides, maps can be very helpful particularly in an etwinning project, as partners come from different countries. Both the teachers and the students can have a closer virtual contact and relation when they have a clearer view of what the area of a partner looks like. Map Activities, such as giving directions of going e.g. from the nearest partner's airport to his/her school, can also be sharedFebruary 22 at 1:44pm · Edited · Like · 4

Cándida CalderónI think you can use maps in other subjects, too!
