The disruption of trade during the Japanese Occupation led to a food shortage, hence food rationing was introduced to solve the problem. Each household could obtain ration cards using the "Peace Living Certificate"

The limited food made it expensive and hence black markets started to thrive, and food was sold at a high price many could not afford.

The Japanese had unlimited "banana notes" as they could simply print more whenever they needed money. This inflated the cost of food and essential items which made life even more difficult for people and black markets continued to thrive. For example, a dozen of eggs which cost $0.20 before the war, had its price skyrocket up to $120.

History - Chapter 6- How Did World War II affect Singapore?

May 1, 2014

Goh Bang Rui, Teacher at Ministry of Education of Singapore
Presentation
