394-ED-554: UDL Big Ideas by Knaus

You have read the ASCD chapter on UDL. Now, think of someone in your life or classroom who could or has benefited from the UDL principals and processes. What did they need? How did a teacher accomplish this? What role does current technology play in UDL? Alternatively, what vision do you have for UDL in your teaching? Imagine a learning situation that could benefit from UDL, what is your plan?

I think it's a great way to reach all students and target those "hard to reach" students. I feel as UDL gives each student a voice!

It is a goal of mine to use UDL in my classroom. In our school we split our math kids up into a higher and lower level for every class EXCEPT geometry. It is really challenging as a teacher to have the top student and the bottom student in the same class. So using the UDL model I would love to be able to reach and challenge all my students based on what is most helpful to them.

All students benefit from UDL, so I can't think of a specific student who would necessarily benefit more than the others. The best example I have of using UDL in my classroom is our bingo or tic tac toe system we use when we do book group projects. Students get to choose response methods that align with their interests and learning styles instead of just doing a project to satisfy the teacher's wants/needs. Technology adds another element to UDL. When I began teaching, my district only had computer labs, so it was hard to integrate technology into the classroom in ways that assist student learning. Now that I have Chromebook carts and 14 Chromebooks housed in my room, it is easier to integrate technology centered activities into our tic tac toe or bingo charts. Instead of hand drawing a comic strip to describe the plot of a story, students are able to use technology to create digital comic strips. Technology has also been helpful with my students who are soft spoken or shy because they get to record themselves giving class presentations before they actually have to stand in front of the class to present. Some students who absolutely cannot handle speaking in front of 21 other students get to submit their videos to me in place of presenting.
-Ashley

I have a student who has a severe stutter. He is incapable of presenting anything in front of his classmates, but he really wants to participate. On presentation days in his class, rather than have the kids do large group presentations, usually I will have the kids present to each other in small groups which he is much more comfortable with. Since we are BYOD, the kids can use their devices to help present and don't need the large screen. This is really helpful. I have also used the discussion board tool on Schoology and Padlet to simulate discussion that he can still be a part of. Technology plays a huge role in UDL, as it opens up a lot of doors not only for this student, but for other more introverted students.

I love that the philosophy of UDL is to give someone access to something that will help them. I liked your idea of being able to let him record his voice or even video and voice instead of writing. He would still be getting to the end learning target, just in a different way.
-Kate

My first job was teaching in a school with a large number of English Language Learners. As a new teacher, my toolbox was fairly limited but the teachers that were there had a long list of great ideas. One idea that a history teacher used that was a great way to engage all levels of learners was a Movie Poster Project. For each unit, the students would pick characters from history and design a movie poster based on what the story would be about. The final project was to then create a movie trailer for one of the posters created throughout the year. The last day of school, the students would eat popcorn and watch all of the trailers.

-Dylan Knipple

Other students like to use notes that I have created. Many students like to use videos that I create. A handful of students like one-on-one instruction where they can ask me specific questions. Another small group will use youtube or khan academy videos. My math class is open in the sense that the students can pick any option to learn the material. Having multiple options benefits everyone because they can use more than one way to learn the material.

UDL truly does offer bigger and better ideas than you would may see in a traditional brick and mortar school. It gives lessons a spark that was overlooked heavily in the past. The biggest piece students need is engaging material. If there is no engagement, learning cannot take place. Letting students have multiple options is a safe and effective way to cater to all students! I hope to use this more after completing this class/degree. - Cole
