He was the first member of the Republican party to be selected as president of the United States. Many abolitionist were supportive of Lincoln becoming president because he was the key to help abolish slavery . He thought slavery was high immoral and wanted it abolished very quickly and effectively . His ultimate goal as president was to preserve the Union and end sectionalism within the United States . This was important because the Southern states disagreed with Lincoln's goals and views and as a result they seceded and created the Confederacy.

This was the very first battle and the primary start of the Civil war . Many U.S. troops were sent to fight at Fort Sumter but later ordered to evacuate the battle. However, many troops did not answer the order and stayed to fight . They were met with a powerful and overwhelming force and made the decision to surrender on April 13th , 1861 . There was only one death and zero casualties . After the war , there was an increase for military support in both the North and South and four more states joined the Confederacy.

It was the first major land battle fought in the civil war . About 35,000 Union troops marched from the U.S. capitol to strike against the Confederacy , which only  consisted of about 20,000 troops . They fought alongside a small river known as the bull run is Manassas , Virginia .  During the middle of the war , both sides had an even amount of troops and it was said that someone yelled out "Bull run" as the Union proceeded to attack . That saying became famous among Union Troops . After 4,750 casualties , the Union surrendered and the Confederacy gained an unexpected win .

Starting on August 28th , Jackson was informed that Robert E. Lee had reached the Thoroughfare Gap and was Arriving among the union the following day. The Union was lead by John Pope and the Union unleashed many attacks on the confederacy before Lee arrived . Once Lee arrived , he planned a massive counterattack on the Union with 30,000 strong soldiers . Towards the end of the battle pope takes his worn out army to retreat across the Bull Run surrendering to the confederacy. With about 22,000 causalities from the battle , the Confederates left with a huge victory and a boost of confidence , ultimately leading them to begin Union territory campaigns .

While the struggle of the war was at its climax point Lincoln had to be a figure to bring a sense of security and hope to the people of the union. In his address he states “Four score and seven years ago our father brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that “all men are created equal”.” In this quote he is trying to make a point that this country was founded on the principle of equality and he promises to make all of the effort he can to help it stay that way and that is why his "We the people " speech is so famous.. Many people in the country were losing hope and just wanted things to calm down and be normal.

Robert E. Lee Commanded over 30,000 men with General Thomas " Stonewall" Jackson along his side , ready to attack . The Confederates seized the city a day before the battle but the evening of September 16th , General McClellan showed up to the battle field with twice as many men. At the end of the battle Robert E. Lee surrendered and the Union gained its first victory even though they suffered a loss of over 12,000 men to the Confederacy's 10,700 men .

The battle was said to have the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point because it had involved so much violence. Union General George Meade's Army defeated attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee, ending Lee's attempt to invade the North. Lee led his army back to Virginia. Between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both armies were casualties in the three-day battle of Gettysburg, the most in US history.

Lincoln was shot in the head as he watched the play and was pronounced dead the following day at 7:22 am in the Peterson House .He was the first U.S. president to be assassinated , with his funeral marking an extended period of national mourning. He had a funeral train that lasted 14 days and was viewed by over 10,000 people in his remembrance .

The surrender at Appomattox Court House occurred in April 1865 when Confederate General Lee submitted to Union General  Ulysses S. Grant ultimately ending the Civil War. After the fall of Richmond April 2–3, Lee and his retreated west to the village of Appomattox Court House when the Army of James forced them to raise a white flag. Within hours an elated Grant hosted his adversary . Now Lee accepted generous terms from  Grant, who paroled the Confederate Soldiers and allowed the officers to keep their sidearms and horses. Lee issued his famous farewell orders, praising his men’s courage and putting the blame of their defeat on superior Union resources.

Written and introduced by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation changed the status of African Americans from enslaved to free U.S. Citizens . The Emancipation Proclamation was a strategic move from Abraham Lincoln to weaken the south's ability to keep division in the U.S. and to keep the country in unison. Although the abolishment of slavery was a great event to come , it terrified many people in the North and South. They feared how slaves would react as free after being captivated and oppressed for over 250 years with the idea that slaves could possibly destroy our country .

General William T. Sherman abandoned his supply line and marched across Georgia to the Atlantic Ocean to prove to the Confederacy that its government was very weak and could not protect its people from Union invasions He practiced psychological warfare and he strongly he believed that by marching his army across the state he would demonstrate to the world that the Union had a power the Confederacy could not compete or compare to.
