She explains the smells and the sounds around her. Then the boy runs in screaming papa to which the girl tells him papa is gone. 
"The boy's sister nudged him under the table, hard, with the scuffed toe of her Mary Jane. "Papa's gone," she said.
This shows how harsh the girl is she doesn't seem to care. She tells him it comes from the horses hey saw outside the train.

She now is always with friends and ignores her family. The brother feels she doesn't even recognize him anymore and their old life seems so far gone. 
"She ate all her meals with her friends.... hardly seemed to recognize him at all" 
This shows how she is changing.
