Apple VoiceOver for iPads or Macbooks

Apple VoiceOver -accessibility feature

About: Apple VoiceOver allows the user to listen to and navigate their Apple device by listening to an audio guide. "VoiceOver is a built-in screen reader that describes aloud what appears on your computer screen: it speaks the text that’s in documents and windows."

Developer: Apple Inc.

Cost: Free with the purchase of an iPad (mini, air, pro, or original), running the current iOS, with prices ranging from $330 to $800

Population: VoiceOver was designed to assist and support people with a visual impairment.

Goal: VoiceOver allows the user to navigate various apps, all websites, navigate maps, and read text (online/websites, PDFs, books, and more).

Pros: The VoiceOver feature can help people with visual impairments navigate their Apple devices without assistance from another person. The feature can also be used to support people with reading needs who do not have visual impairments (ex: people with dyslexia, people who best gain information by listening, etc.).

The user can change/customize the language, dialect, gender, and speed of the "voice" and customize their listening experience.

The VoiceOver feature can be added as a "shortcut" for ease of use. On the iPad and Macbook, the user only needs to triple-click their home button (iPad) or power button/fingerprint reader (Macbook) to turn the shortcut on or off after turning on the accessibility application under the device settings.

Cons: VoiceOver is a feature specifically for Apple Products, which are expensive. One cannot use this specific accessibility tool on a non-Apple device. When using this feature with people without a hearing impairment, turning the function off can pose a challenge (triple-click the home button to turn on and off). For example, a reader may need to turn the function off before turning the page on a document or when switching to a new app. The user may think their iPad is "stuck" if they did not have their volume turned up and the VoiceOver feature had been accidentally turned on.

The VoiceOver feature may read more information than the user intends, like a sidebar of a website or a notification like when the user received a new email. The user may also need to physically select the text they wish to be read upon initiating the VoiceOver function.

Classroom Use: Students can use the VoiceOver feature to support their reading and writing needs. Reading materials can be read aloud without a teacher a) reading the text aloud in person or b) pre-recording a read-aloud of the text. Students can use this feature to review any text they have written on the iPad. For example, students use VoiceOver to revise and edit typed responses by listening back to their work. Students can more easily identify where a punctuation mark was missed, a spelling error was made, where grammatical errors were made, etc. This feature can be helpful for all students, with and without disabilities.

Personal Review: I use VoiceOver both in my classroom and for personal use. My students feel more independent when they can allow the iPad to read a digital text without needing me to read it to the whole class/small group. My students also use the feature to double-check their writing, as many of my students use speech-to-text to spell unfamiliar words or to dictate written responses. This feature allows them to review their text and ensure the speech-to-text used the correct word in the sentence. I use the feature to read academic articles as well as books on my Kindle app that do not have audiobooks available (college texts).

Additional Links/Learning Guides:

Macbooks- https://www.apple.com/voiceover/info/guide/_1121.html

iPads- https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/use-voiceover-in-apps-ipad3d49fe6f/ipados

(Lauren Zadernak- Module 2)

Maltron Expanded Keyboard

Maltron Expanded Keyboard

Developer: PCDMaltron

Cost: (After converting from Euro) $739.35-$794.02 (one website had upwards of $988.00)

Population: This product was designed for a population of individuals with Cerebral Palsy, individuals who have physical impairments, and individuals with visual impairments.

Goal: The goal of the Maltron Expanded Keyboard is to provide opportunities for typing accuracy and work efficiency for individuals with physical disabilities (i.e. Cerebral Palsy) and individuals with visual impairments. The large surface and keyguards are built in to reduce errors when using a keyboard. This allows for individuals to have better accuracy and work efficiency. This product is built for individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments in mind. The connector cord is designed to prevent damage to the keyboard if the cord is accidentally pulled or hit. The keys are large and color-coded including black on white for alphanumeric and cursor, black on pink for function, and black on yellow for control keys. The developers do have alternative options if required. The Maltron Expanded Keyboard also offers an audio-visual feedback system which enables the keyboard to beep and show light whenever a key is pressed. This feature can be turned on and off.

Key Features of the Maltron Expanded Keyboard:

Extra space keys

QWERTY letter layouts (or FOU layout if in another country)

Angle adjustment

Sticky shift keys- this allows the individual to not need two hands

Shift Lock option

Extra keyboard socket so another keyboard can be attached

Pros for the Maltron Expanded Keyboard:

Audio-visual feedback is important so the individual can focus on what they are typing rather than where the keys are.

Angle adjustment that is based on the individual and their specific needs

Different layouts so the keyboard can be used in different countries.

The keyboard includes keyguards to limit errors.

The color-coded keys provide visual support and organization.

Cons for the Maltron Expanded Keyboard

This device would be difficult to move to different areas since it is large. It is not able to fold or fit in compact spaces.

This keyboard has a high cost.

Would the extra space keys be difficult to maneuver around? Would having extra space keys cause errors?

Is there ease in set up?

Classroom Use: Within my classroom, this assistive technology device would be a perfect fit for two of my students. One student has Cerebral Palsy and utilizes a wheelchair. She has use of her hands but requires extra time and space to navigate the computer and type. This device would be perfect for her needs, especially the keyguards. My other student would utilize this keyboard since she requires keyguards as well as color-coded keys. She requires a large area since her hands move quickly and she has limited range of mobility with her fingers. This device would need to be placed on a table instead of a desk.

Personal Review: This device is a great tool for individuals who have physical impairments that limit their stamina when working and typing. This keyboard allows the individual to have less errors, more accuracy, and in turn, more efficiency. Although I do not have this device in my classroom, I know we have the device within our Assistive Technology department. I plan to ask about trialing the device with my two students who may benefit from the use as we look at work completition, accuracy, and efficiency.

Additional Links:

Video Overview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySpOYTQyI70

https://www.woodlaketechnologies.com/product-p/mal111.htm

(Abby Smith- Module 2)

Flora App for Time Management

Flora app- Time Management

About: Flora is a time management app that allows the user to set a specified time to work and watch a tree grow as the time grows shorter. The user can create To-Do lists to organize the tasks they wish to complete in the given amount of time. As the user uses the app, Flora keeps track of your time on task in its Habit section. The user can view their trends over time and gather statistical data about their work habits. Multiple users can join one user's productivity page to watch a garden grow as they remain on task. Additional features like the Pause button allow the user to "pause" their time-on-task without stopping the countdown clock while the Break section allows the user to take a timed break before starting another timed session. If the user is unable to complete the time, their plant "dies". The user may choose to add their credit card to the app and pledge a specific amount of money to donate if they cannot meet their goal. This money goes to support Trees for the Future and Eden Reforestation Project which help plant trees in communities in Africa, East Asia, and South America.

Developer: AppFinca Inc.

Cost: Free

Population: All Ages and nearly all users (no information to support those with visual impairments)

Goal: Users track their productivity and can set goals to stay on-task.

Pros: This makes a countdown timer more fun and engaging. The user can set customized tasks to complete during the countdown (universal tasks and/or tasks for specific days of the week). Multiple users can work together to remain on task and watch their plants grow in a garden.

Cons: This app does not have a stopwatch feature like other task management apps. It also does not have a wide range of "time". The lowest amount of time-on-task a user can set is 5 minutes and the highest is 3 hours. The electronic device cannot be used while the app is running, or the user's plant will die. The user would need to complete electronic tasks on a different device or complete tasks that do not require a device at all.

Classroom Use: Teachers could use this app with a wide range of students. Students would be motivated to watch their tree grow as they continue to remain productive in the classroom.

Whole group- The teacher could use this app for whole class on-task activities like classroom clean-ups, transitions, independent work, etc.

Small group- A small group of students could be given a set time to complete a series of tasks. The timer can be set and a to-do list can be created in the app.

Individual- A student could be given a customized to-do list (words or emojis) to complete in a given time frame. The student or teacher could monitor the app and "end" the time as students do not stay on-task. This app could be very beneficial for data tracking time-on-task across various academic settings.

Personal Review: I am excited to trail this app with students in both the general and special education settings. All students need support staying on task and this app allows for a fun visual experience.

(Lauren Zadernak- Module 3)

Samba Toothbrush

this product came across my Facebook and I couldn't help but share!

Developer: Curaprox-USA

Cost: $399.00 (currently on sale for $299.00)

Population: Any adult individual, however, Curaprox made this product with individuals with disabilities in mind. Curaprox says this product supports hygiene accessibility for people with limited mobility or dexterity. According to Forbes.com, Curaprox developed this product for all individuals but had an overwhelming response from individuals with disabilities.

Goal: The goal of Curaprox's Samba toothbrush is to provide hygiene accessibility for adult individuals with limited mobility and/or dexterity. The toothbrush provides an accessible way to encourage oral care.

Key Features of the Samba Toothbrush

Low and high frequency oscillations

12,900 bristles

Pros:

Limited need for mobility/dexterity

On/off power button

Do not need to move hand once toothbrush is in mouth

Supports daily living for adults with and without disabilities

Generalized across environment, people, situations

Cons:

Only for adults

High cost

One size for head of toothbrush

Must be charged (may need space for charging)

Individuals with very limited mobility and/or dexterity may need support with use

Sensory problems? Personal hygiene is a part of the curriculum within my self-contained program and I would be happy to support oral hygiene with the use of this toothbrush.

Personal Review: The Samba Toothbrush is a great new invention for individuals with disabilities, specifically disabilities that affect mobility and dexterity. A few weeks ago, a parent reached out to me about their concerns for the personal hygiene of their student, a 17-year-old female student with Rett Syndrome. The student is quickly losing mobility and dexterity of her hands and the parent wanted to see if our OT had any options for them. As soon as this tool came across my page, I immediately sent it to the parent. Although it is expensive, this product is going to change the hygiene field! More companies will start making products accessible for people with disabilities. I'm excited to see how the world changes.

Additional Links:

Time Magazine

https://time.com/collection/best-inventions-2023/6323132/samba-robotic-toothbrush/

Forbes

https://www.forbes.com/sites/meggenharris/2023/10/11/this-robotic-toothbrush-cleans-your-teeth-for-you/?sh=10b6d47c6a59

Review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9Bsbudp72k

(Abby Smith)

This product can be used by retailers, manufacturers, embroiderers, personal use, and more. The design of the folder makes it ideal for people with mobility needs.

Goal: The goal of the folder is to provide an easy-to-use tool that increases productivity, accuracy, accessibility, and generalization of folding laundry/shirts. Reviewers praise the ease of use and improved speed when folding laundry. The folder helps create a uniform fold that improves organization.

Key Features of the FlipFold Shirt and Laundry Folder:

4 panels

5 bumpers, 4 with rubber cushions, that help with handling

Non-skid performance

Available in adult and junior

Pros:

Ease of use for any shirt or pant

Does not skid on tables and is able to be put on any surface

Plastic (not breakable and can be wiped down easily)

Holes for finger use

Can be used in the home, at school, and at work- generalization!!!

Cons:

Can be difficult to hold onto shirts while folding (ex. silky shirts can slide)

Those with limited mobility and dexterity may need additional accommodations (i.e. handles)

Large and cannot be transported in small containers (Open 24" x 27", Closed 9.5" x 24")

Multi-step process, individuals may need visual supports to use

Classroom Use: Within my classroom, this device is used each day. We have a job skills period on the schedule and one job students practice is shirt/clothes folding. We use this device to make folding easy! When I take students to a local sporting goods store, the students are asked to use the same type of folder when folding shirts. Even the employees at the store use the folder! I have provided parents with the link to purchasing folding devices so students can help at home.

Personal Review: This is one of my all-time favorite assistive technology devices to use within my classroom, on community-based vocational instruction, and even within my own home! Once students (and myself) learn the steps to using this tool, it is easy to use and improves speed and productivity. I have had many parents say how grateful they are for this tool because it allows the students to participate in laundry at home and keeps them organized! Many students enjoy using this device during our job skills time. When we attend our CBVI to the local sporting goods store, students will fight (not meanly) over who gets to fold shirts with the other employees. I like that this device can be generalized across settings. Many of our general education students use this device on their retail jobs and within the school store. I hope more students and teachers can start using a simple device like this!

Additional Links:

Amazon Search Results for "Laundry Folder"

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=laundry+folder&crid=M4EB1WMUFMLT&sprefix=laundry+folder%2Caps%2C148&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

Video Overview and How to Use

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E1uusCXhzE

(Abby Smith- Module 3)

One parent said the app was life-changing in developing the independence of their son in the morning and evening times. As a teacher, I would use this app with my students who need visual schedules during a period of time (ex. social studies class). I like the idea of wait time and the visual timers. I could use this app when I take students into the community for our community-based vocational instruction trips so the students can work on time management and emotion regulation.

Personal Review: This app is a great option for parents and teachers looking to implement simple assistive technology that will benefit their children. I like that this app promotes the independence of students regardless of if they have a disability. The color coding is a great tool that we use within our classrooms and can use with the app as well. I know of one specific student I will want to trial this app with because this app would support her IEP objectives of building independence, regulating emotions, and following a visual schedule.

Additional Links:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tigXrKqXNVc (App overview)

https://www.beevisual.com/ (Developer website)

(Abby Smith)

Livescribe Echo 2 Pen

About: Livescribe Echo 2 Smartpen allows students to record audio to their handwritten notes in real time. Using the special paper and 72 live pictures taken every second, the pen allows students to review their work and to listen the exact notes that correspond to each specific place in their writing or drawing. This works particularly well with new strategies, algorithm equations, and theorems. It would also benefit our students when learning to graph and using the various concepts that are needed to be efficient with that skill.

Developer: Livescribe

Cost: $119.95 (Though they are cheaper on other outlets.)

Population: There isn't an age that that pen was specifically designed for, as anyone that can write/draw with intention can use this with efficiency.

Goal: The goal of the Livescribe Echo 2 Smartpen is to make academics easier by giving students a way to combine everything that they hear, say, read, and write in a classroom and transport that information to other environments.

Pros:

Add another dimension to your notes by recording everything you hear, say, and write.

Record and Replay audio recordings directly from the pen or smartphone/tablet.

Save, organize, and send interactive notes to email, cloud, or messaging apps.

Share your notes in real-time with your classmates or teammates on Zoom or Teams.

Transcribe your notes into text instantly in 27+ languages.

Cons:

Have to use the specially designed paper in order for it to be most effective.

Additional technology is required in order to use all functions.

Software must be updated continuously on all devices connected to the pen.

Classroom Use: Remember when were in school, taking notes on new concepts, and then we get home to study and our notes just didn't make sense anymore? This pen takes that guesswork out of the equation. Students are able to pinpoint exact moments of time in the lecture and recall exactly what the most important parts of that lecture were. Speech also matches up to drawings, so that students do not have to focus on writing and drawing at the same time, but rather can spend their time getting the most important parts down. This would be great for new concepts in math, as they often come with many parts that build upon one another.

Personal Review: I have used a pen like this before, and absolutely loved every component that went with it. I miss a lot when I try to transcribe notes while actively listening and trying to engage in meetings, lectures, classes and professional learning moments. This pen really was a great asset to have when you are a multi-sensory learner and need it presented in all forms. It did more work than I did to keep up, and I was able to take more in which helped me in the end. Being able to transport the lecture to my home, or other school environments to play for others also really helped. I like that this pen comes with specially designed paper with recording features tied in to the real time notes, as that was not an option on the one that I am familiar with, and I had to play the full recording several times in order to hear exactly the moments that I needed.

Additional Links:

(247) Windows Livescribe Echo 2 Smartpen Quick Tutorial. - YouTube

(Samantha Perry- Module 2)

About: I-Connect is an app for students to use to monitor their own behaviors. Teachers set up a personal account and add students who need support tracking behavioral goals like staying on-task, remaining in their designated area, and more. The teacher can set up each child's classes, set class goals, set specific timed intervals for prompting, and collect digital data. Once a student's profile is created, they can log in to begin tracking their own behaviors. The app will chime according to the time set by the teacher and will prompt the student to respond Yes or No to the selected question ("Are you on task?"). If the student does not select a response, the app will select No. At the end of the session, the student data is collected and can be viewed by the teacher and parent.

Developer: University of Kansas

Cost: Free

Population: Students who need to self-monitor their behaviors.

Goal: Allow students to self-monitor their behaviors so that unwanted behaviors improve/lessen over time.

Pros: This app gives students more autonomy and awareness over their behaviors. The chime notifies the student to respond to the prompt and notifies the teacher that an interval has passed if they too are tracking data. Data is collected digitally and can support behavior tracking.

Cons: Sessions will pause if the student needs to use their technological device in class. The chime sound may also cause a distraction to peers. Student data may not be accurate if the student is not answering honestly. Students can also end their sessions independently without the teacher's permission. Students cannot use other applications on their devices when this app is running. Students would need to either be able to read their personal prompt or know what their expected behavior is before utilizing the app.

Classroom Use: This app would be helpful to use with a wide range of learners who need behavioral support within the classroom. I could use this will children with ADHD, ASD, or general behavior needs during the content instruction.

Personal Review: I am excited to trial this app with a few of my students. My school needs to approve the app before I can install it on student devices, so I will be allowing my student to use my school tablet.

Additional Links:

I-Connect Website: https://iconnect.ku.edu/

(Lauren Zadernak- Module )

In the classroom, we do not always have adequate manipulatives, especially when the math moves beyond manipulative whole numbers (fractions, decimals, integers, negative numbers, etc.) Step-by-step video instruction provides students with a review of the skill. They are given practice problems to solve correctly before the application moves to the next lesson, requiring students to show mastery.

Cons: If only using the app, students may find that their teacher has taught a different strategy than the app wants them to learn to solve an equation.

About: Seeing AI is a free app that narrates the world around you. Designed with and for the blind and low-vision community, this ongoing research project harnesses the power of AI to open up the visual world. Seeing AI assists with daily tasks from reading, to describing photos, to identifying products, and more. The app continues to evolve as we hear from the community and AI research advances.

Developer: Microsoft

Cost: free

Population: Anyone with no or low vision

Goal: The goal of Seeing AI is to provide tools to people with visual impairments to assist them with their daily tasks, such as:

• Short Text - Speaks text as soon as it appears in front of the camera.
• Documents - Provides audio guidance to capture a printed page, and recognizes the text, along with its original formatting. Ask questions about the contents to easily find the information you need.
• Products - Scans barcodes, or Accessible QR codes, using audio beeps to guide you; hear the name, and package information when available.
• Scenes - Hear an overall description of the scene captured. Tap "More Info" to hear an even richer description. Or, explore the photo by moving your finger over the screen to hear the location of different objects.
• People - Saves people’s faces so you can recognize them, and get an estimate of their age, gender, and expression.
• Currency - Recognizes currency notes.
• Colors - Identifies colors.
• Handwriting - Reads handwritten text like in greeting cards (available in a subset of languages).
• Light - Generates an audible tone corresponding to the brightness in the surroundings.
• Images in other apps - Just tap “Share” and “Recognize with Seeing AI” to describe images from Mail, Photos, Twitter, and more.

Pros:

• Able to be used for all types of visual needs
Cons:

• Would need to be able to use a device.
• AI limitations

• Needs to be focused on whatever it is "reading"
Classroom Use: This app would be helpful in the classroom to help students with low vision read the room. The text could be read from textbooks or printed documents.

Personal Review: I downloaded this app and was shocked at its accuracy in giving information about its surroundings. I tried it out at a family function and it was able to tell me a very good description of each family member I scanned. It was a bit touchy when reading things that were not on paper.
