The song the orderly is singing is a direct representation of the ignorance this society has towards death, as well as how little people are left that care for human life based on the painter being the only one with a disgusted reaction to that ignorance. The orderly’s song symbolizes how desensitized this society is towards death.

The drop cloth is meant to represent the true nature of their society and how it is more comparable to a dirty rag than a mural of a garden. This comparison symbolizes the true nature of their society, hiding its dark side of assisted suicide and killing through quality of life changes.

“The mural he was working on depicted a very neat garden. Men and women in white, doctors and nurses, turned the soil, planted seedlings, sprayed bugs, spread fertilizer” (Vonnegut 2).

The work that the people in purple do in the mural represents the literal work that they do for there jobs, but instead of them cleaning up the garden, it’s them cleaning up the world of people to stop it from becoming “overgrown”. This symbolizes the desensitized nature of the society if killing others can be seen as a respectable job.
