In 2010, the "blowout protector" which was used in case of an emergency to prevent oil spillage, failed and caused a gas spillage. A large explosion occurred, sinking the oil rig. This disaster cause one of the largest oil spills recorded in history. There were 11 fatalities and 17 injuries.


The Deepwater Horizon disaster spilled around 134 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico over a period of 87 days, fouling 1,300 miles of shoreline along five states. The oil spill killed thousands of marine mammals and sea turtles, and contaminated their habitats. (bird,fishes, dolphins and whales) A significant portion of the Gulf floor was affected by oil. Scientists estimate the habitats on the bottom of the Gulf could take anywhere from multiple decades to hundreds of years to fully recover. In Louisiana, erosion rates approximately doubled along roughly 100 miles of shoreline; the effect lasted for three years.
