A very important theme in my story would be the theme of individuality. There are two separate categories of people in this novel: jocks and pukes. Jocks are supposed to be the athletic students who aren't the brightest of the bunch. While the pukes are thought to be the nerds who are good with electronics. This quote is an example of Mike trying to motivate Zach to team up with him: "Pukes know how to do stuff and jocks hate to lose," (Lipsyte 253). In another part of the story, Mike is working with Zach to take down Coach Cody when he realizes that pukes are actually very concentrated and good at what they do. This quote is important because shows how Mike realized that potential of pukes, "Zach occasionally grunted and hummed, but his thin shoulders barely moved. In the zone. He could be lifting or running through outfield drills. Who'd ever think puked could concentrate like this? Why not?" (Lipsyte 257)
